Many of the jobs I’ve held have involved writing. I’ve worked in public relations, as a marketing writer for a student travel organization, and as a columnist for Gentry magazine. I’ve also taught on the elementary, high school and college level. This is such a lovely story and one that I’m sure lots of kids, especially girls will love! Marnie Blue is worried about her first day at mermaid school. Her famous aunt Christobel Blue had a reputation at school and Marnie’s worried about how the teachers, and other mermaids, will treat her. And while she does manage to make some friends, it seems there’s someone at the school that doesn’t like Marnie at all.

Marnie is upset that the teachers seem to think that she is going to behave in a certain way because of her aunt and that people don’t like her and she doesn’t know why. On her first day, Marnie is upset when she gets told off after a sea snake comes out of her bag and blames her aunt for pranking her. She then gets told off in her music lesson when the other children think she is showing off. The teacher gives her a warning and tells her so won’t tolerate another member of the Blue family behaving in an unruly manner. The whole story has a satisfying ending and a fun twist in the very last chapter, which although I did predict, may not be spotted by younger readers, and it certainly does make me want to read more about one character in particular (though I don’t know if we will in future books). The story of what happens to Marnie and how the whole book ends is very good and I like the way that Marnie thinks and acts towards everyone, and I like the message of friendship and being nice to others regardless of what may happen. If you could just put up your right fin…” Syrena prompts, as she leads us through the mermaid school pledge.

It is Marnie Blue's very first day at Lady Sealia Foam's Mermaid School, and she's terrified. What if she can't make any new friends, or if she's asked to ride a seahorse? What's more, her famous diva aunt Christabel was a notorious rebel at the same school, and got up to all sorts of naughtiness. Marnie is soon branded a troublemaker by her grumpy octopus music teacher and wants nothing more than to clam up. But when a fellow pupil finds herself in danger, it's up to Marnie to show that daring runs in the family and swim to the rescue. ] A lovely short-chapter reading book which is perfect for young readers who are ready to move into first chapter books. Mermaid School by Lucy Courtenay is a charming new short chapter book which will appeal to fans of Rainbow Magic. Marnie Blue, our young mermaid heroine, is starting mermaid school and is full of worries, will she make a good impression, will she have to ride the terrifying sea horses but mainly what will everyone think when they find out her aunt is the famous singer and DJ Christabel Blue. Like all good school stories, there are scary teachers, a mean girl, adventures and lessons learnt about the importance of being true to oneself and the importance of good friends. This is a lovely story with quite a simple plot but one I really did enjoy reading. ‘Mermaid School’ is a typical tale about a girl finding it hard to fit in on her first day at school, and it’s a story that lots of children can relate to. Even though Marnie is a mermaid and there are lots of references to things that are in the sea, the story itself is so relatable because Marnie is like any other girl attending her first day at school, and really just wants to fit in at the school and be liked. Unfortunately for her, her aunt’s reputation for being a bit of trouble maker is strong, and it isn’t long before Marnie finds herself the centre of attention for the wrong reasons.Ninety minutes in the pool wearing my tail was tougher than any workout I’ve ever endured and by the end I was exhausted.

When the mermaids jump into the spring – it’s cold – it’s 72 degrees Fahrenheit year round (about 22 degrees Celsius).” There's clamburgers for lunch today, / Along with seaweed pie. / And frozen salt pops for dessert! / There's nothing I don't try." A variety of new experiences – from art classes and fishing excursions, to pirate experiences and mermaid schools and more – are already, or will soon be, available to book at Walt Disney World Resort hotels. I wanted to create a community where people who shared the same interests could come together,” Syrena says, who’s also a mermaid performer otherwise known as Cara Nicole Neo.

For inspiration, Syrena looks to merfriends around the world, a loose community of aficionados who revel in slipping on a tail and getting wet. The founder of Singapore’s first Mermaid School is on a mission to create the city-state’s first pod. Though only a few months old, and with a handful of students, Syrena is hoping her school will spread the love.
