Founded in 2005, Laika Studios has become one of the top companies in stop-motion animation. Since their first feature film, Coraline, debuted in 2009, every Laika feature film has been nominated for at least one Academy Award, which is impressive on its own. Their reputation for quality is well known and there seems to always be a demand for their films. In the comedy thriller, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman, who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul-whisperer bravely summons up all that makes a hero – courage and compassion – as he finds his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits. As “animatics” have become a vital part of the animation process this is an essential inclusion, especially for anyone interested in any form of animation including stop-motion. It’s a great way to compare the finished product and how much character and subtly the animators place into the completed animation. The Final Thought The voice-performances in Coraline are wonderful and help to bring these characters to life. Dakota Fanning was perfectly cast as Coraline. Fanning imbues the character with plenty of personality: providing Coraline with a clear sense of character. The role was a great match. Coraline Jones is bored in her new home until she finds a secret door that leads into a world that’s just like her own … but better! But when this fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her “other” mother tries to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness and bravery to get home.

One of the aspects of Coraline that continues to age wonderfully is its commitment to world-building. Each aspect of the world was meant to create emotion and depth, and the restoration only further strengthens this choice. The tactility of Coraline comes shining through, highlighting the technical feat it represented in 2009.
