Description

More than a work of fiction, Naked Presidents is a wild romp through an alternate universe, where conventional wisdom is overthrown and some of our most cherished myths are destroyed. But while political junkies find that event and its aftermath a bottomless source for conspiracy theorizing, it is to Silver an instrument for a greater and more contemporary political purpose, and indeed a tool for destroying conspiracy theories altogether.

I find it a bit of a hard stretch on the career Air Force thing (not that he was cowardly, I just think he would have transitioned into the private sector/ political arena sooner). His term (or terms) might have played out very messily considering what time period he would have served in (would anyone really have wanted to be in the Oval Office in 1968?Some of the technologies we use are necessary for critical functions like security and site integrity, account authentication, security and privacy preferences, internal site usage and maintenance data, and to make the site work correctly for browsing and transactions.

By contrast Bill Clinton’s presidency is cut short by his assassination on November 22, 1995, thus leaving him a martyred president with no extramarital dalliance in the White House to sully his historical reputation. Allen declined to provide any details on any tensions in the Clinton's private quarters during the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Silver clearly knows his history: the most important single episode that informs this narrative is not the JFK impeachment or the Clinton assassination but the Cuban Missile Crisis, which he details in his prologue.Silver’s focus is on recounting events in his alternate timeline; because of this, his development of his novel’s characters is much weaker. While the document was designated "for the President's eyes only," Allen would end up seeing more than he bargained for that day in 1981: a naked president. Other authors have made such an effort in nonfiction works, so Silver’s novel is a change of pace in that regard.

A quote attributed to Ben Franklin establishes the theme: "impeachment is the political equivalent of assassination. It is easy to nitpick Silver’s postulations, but they nonetheless offer an interesting commentary about the politics of the 1980s and 1990s. More than a work of fiction, Naked Presidents is a philosophical novel which explodes conventional wisdom and destroys some of our most cherished myths. The result is a thought experiment that largely succeeds in altering the way we think about presidential legacies: Clinton as the heroic figure that JFK became in our reality. Kennedy was not murdered in Dallas, that Bill Clinton’s life was different, Impeachment, the Bay of Pigs, and an unforeseen President of the United States. In this quirky, yet fascinating book, James Silver turns History inside out to show what might have happened. The alternate timeline is not greatly different than our own, but different enough that it makes you think.

Kennedy was not murdered in Dallas and in the book not murdered at all, and secondly, the book does contain some sexual content that may not be appropriate for all, especially if you are fond of the character.
