Your instructions should tell you the distances, from that I think you'll have to make a jig. I've freehanded them before, usually the bit has enough of a spur to get it started but....... its easy for the bit to drift off as well and then your cussing because you tried to take a short cut. p.s. I answered in a hurry and now I wonder if I misunderstood! Were you asking if the hinge position is 48mm down from the door or the cabinet? Well, I measured from the cabinet, so it might be one or two mm’s less for the door if it’s a little smaller… Hi Marco, there are no templates as the holes are drilled by machine in the factory obviously. I’d just fit the cabinet part of the hinge into the cabinet and then hold the door up against the cabinet and mark the center of the hinge onto the door. Then you should be able to use the measurements in the post above to get the exact place for the hole. You can be a fraction out and still be okay as there is of course some adjustment in the hinge itself. Correct me if I’ve misunderstood you, in my sketch, I’ve shown the 35mm hole as around 5mm in from the edge, or in other words, the 35mm hole centre is 22.5mm in from the edge. But as always, if you can, try on a scrap piece of wood to see if it suits your project.

If the cup recess is set at the standard 22mm or so in from the edge of the door the mounting plate will need to be raised around 8mm off of the inner side of the unit. A thin 8mm piece of door stop is ideal for this. To drill out the recess for each cup you will need to use a special drill bit known as a Forstner bit. As we are working with a 35mm concealed hinge you will need a 35mm forstner bit.The next task is to measure and mark the positions using a pencil of each mounting plate on the inside of the cupboard or unit you are fixing your door to.

Although they’re both 35mm concealed hinges designs can vary so use an existing hinge to get an exact match Is the Cabinet Door Fitted Internally or Externally (Overlay or Inset)? Sorry I don’t have any insight, but do let me know if you learn anything and I can add it to the post 🙂 As mentioned there are a few other sizes of concealed hinge including 40mm, but these tend to be for more heavy weight specialist applications. How Many Concealed Hinges Should you use on Each Door? Hope that’s useful, I’m going to make a template and use these new style ultrusta cabinet hinges tomorrow, on a ‘hole in the wall’ pair of doors project. I’ll add some notes here if I learn anything new to watch out for. UPDATEInsert the 35mm forstner bit into your drill and then position the point of the guide directly onto the point that the two lines cross.

Repeat the same for the bottom and also for any other hinges, again remembering to measure from the correct point.Fitting a concealed cabinet hinge is a slightly different process to fitting a standard hinge in that it needs to fitted slightly offset from the edge of the door and front edge of the cabinet carcass, so accurate measuring and marking is a must if the cabinet door is to fit correctly. Darn Roman! That’s the one thing I didn’t think to measure. I was more thinking folks would be fitting the hinges to their own cabinets! Right, I will measure this next time I go to IKEA and update the article. Not in the next few days though unfortunately for you. The hinge position is adjustable though as there are rows of fixing holes as you know. If you have the cabinets you can just measure down from the outside top I guess. The other commonly used size of concealed hinge is 26mm. These hinges are a fair bit smaller than the 35mm hinges so are commonly used on the smaller more light weight cupboards and units normally found in bathrooms.

Our Concealed Hinge Template Jig is the perfect solution to prevent struggles when attempting drilling locations for our range of concealed cabinet hinges. It is only suitable for cup sizes 26mm and 35mm. Please note that this Jig is only suitable for overlay installation only and cannot be used for bureau type hinges. It was on the few cabinets I measured David. It’s only critical if you’re using standard, pre-drilled IKEA doors (set for the 48mm). Tony commented below that some doors he had were 62mm, (so I’d get the doors first…). If you’re using your own doors, then it doesn’t really matter where the hinges are, as long as the hinge position on the cabinet are lined up with the holes in the door. I didn’t make a template this time as I only had four hinges to do, but I will soon as I remembered there are two more small and shallow 9mm holes you need to drill to clear two ‘dimples’ on the hinge part going into the door. They look like leftovers from the time when the hinge was screwed into the door (before the friction clasp). Drill the 35mm hole first and pop the hinge in the hole and square it up. Mark the inside of the two small holes, remove the hinge and drill 9mm holes around 4mm deep (little more than a dimple really). Here they are…To test that your mark is accurate and in the correct place position the hinge so that the edge of the mounting plate is flush with line drawn in the above step. You should have around 4-5mm between the cup and edge of the cabinet door. s
