Peele does deliver some great thrills early on but fails to build on them, so his tale never becomes more than the sum of its parts. In the end, Nope, is somewhat unsatisfying, there is a lot going on, and a lot to see and feel, but becoming involved with the characters and their plight is difficult when Peele seems to be actively discouraging it, while he channels his inner ‘M. There’s also a piece on the film’s “white whale” so to speak—the way it was conceived and how it was realized on screen.
