More walks/countryside breaks in the Greater Manchester area can be found here. Lovell Telescope in Jodrell Bank Observatory! Picture by me. The area around Canal Street became one of the UK’s most thriving and active gay communities in the early 90s, making a point of referring to itself as a ‘gay village’. Instrumental in this was the opening of Bar Manto, which pointedly had glass walls on the front so everyone could see what was going on, a pointed move away from the previously furtive nature of the scene. Queer As Folk In 1986, Nancy Noise had gone to live in Ibiza where she heard “Billy Idol, Talking Heads, Yello” and mixed them in DJ sets alongside the Stone Roses and other modern indie. She brought Killing Joke’s Youth, his roadie Alex Paterson and their friends to Future, inadvertently sparking both the Orb and the KLF.

Where would we be without Emmeline Pankhurst, Moss Side-born and the mother of the Suffragette movement? Manchester’s Pankhurst led the British suffragette movement in the early 1900s and campaigned tirelessly for the women’s right to vote. Coronation Street Manchester is a famous city. If you are a football fan, you definitely know Manchester, and even if you are not, you have definitely heard of it. But beyond the scintillating world of football, there is much more to the city, and I am going to uncover those aspects of it in this post. The Madchester/ Baggy look conveyed a confident Northern identity, with its roots in earlier working class street-styles, Scallies and Perry Boys, which were distinct to North West football crowds, but part of the broader Casual subculture. Madchester coalesced around a network of places including the Hacienda, International I and II venues, and the Eastern Bloc and Piccadilly record shops. Documenting it were M62, City Life and Debris magazines. The End fanzine (Liverpool) linked music, fashion, football, and politics. Despite having already acted as a regular character on the famous Manchester soap opera Coronation Street, Peter Noone was only 15-years-old when he took the vocal reins for the Hermits. No stranger to the spotlight, Noone’s irrepressible comedic stage presence and exaggerated Mancunian accent elicited Music Hall era nostalgia for English audiences, while being just plain cute to American youths who could not get enough of the new Brit-beat exports.John Dalton’s 1803 atomic theory with its pioneering work on the constitution of elements was the precursor of all modern chemistry. The splitting of the atom Walsh defines the turning point in his career as being assigned to go and shoot a Wednesday club night at the Hacienda called “Hot”, where he recalls looking around and thinking “What the hell is going on?”. The club dynamic had seemingly changed overnight, everyone in the club was absolutely going for it and were off their heads, the music had changed and everyone was wearing baggy sweatshirts, t-shirts, and dungarees. Walsh contrasts the style with an earlier picture he’d taken at the club; three boys standing on a podium wearing ties, waistcoats, and Ted Baker shirts. Some of the other fun ones I have been to are The Courtyard, Twenty Twenty Two (where you can also play ping pong!) and The Paramount, although, it’s very important for me to mention that The Paramount belongs to the Wetherspoons chain, and several people, including me, are boycotting Wetherspoons due to their absolute horrible treatment of their employees during the Covid 19 pandemic. I am not actually going to pubs during this pandemic in a city as crowded as Manchester, but if I do, Wetherspoons is definitely not going to be one of them.

I came to Manchester in September 2017, very excited to start my PhD Astrophysics programme in my dream university, the University of Manchester. My father and I were being driven up north in a car and I couldn’t stop thinking about the failure of seeing this particular phrase in action: “it is grim up north”. The sun was out and it was warm outside; it was almost like the rain gods decided to give me a literally warm welcome and spared me on my first day in the city. But, I know you, England. The months that followed unarguably proved to me why that phrase is so popular. Kevin Godley spoke of 10cc’s “all for one and one for all” attitude and “very northern work ethic” as the principles that enabled the band to develop as both top-tier producers and ultimately as internationally acclaimed songwriters and artists. There's epic human drone views from 20 Stories, over the gothic John Ryland's library, the two cathedrals in Manchester and Salford clearly visible, along with the eponymous Beetham Tower. Living in the city can get boring. Even if you don’t live here but have a few days on hand to explore the city and the surrounding area, I highly recommend doing day trips to the serene countryside locations not too far from the city! This Manchester image would make a stunning statement piece for your home and office or a unique gift for friends and family. Although too eclectic in styles and genres to be defined by a singular sound or defining principle, Manchester music, over time, has exhibited some recurring features that suggest certain commonalities and regional distinctions. The city’s emergence as the world’s premier industrial city in the early part of the 19th century has molded much of what has subsequently become Manchester’s culture and character. Its spirit of dissent and defiance is rooted in the rise of organized labor during these times; indeed, Manchester was home to Friedrich Engels while he wrote The Conditions of the Working Class in England in 1844.

In addition to inventing the very first computer, Alan Turing’s work at the University of Manchester completely revolutionised the way we communicate. Without him, you would not be reading this. The library One particular drug is remembered as spoiling things. “1990 was the cocaine revival,” says Jane Bussman, “and it is the antithesis of ecstasy: go and buy another waistcoat and stand by the loo, you berk!” Gillespie recalls: “Later that year, when people moved to cocaine, things started to become more paranoid and edgy.” While the 10cc boys used Strawberry Studios to record such local notables as Herman’s Hermits and Wayne Fontana, they also used the space to work on their own burgeoning material. Kevin Godley has spoken of their “all for one and one for all” attitude and “very northern work ethic” as the principles that enabled the band to develop as both top-tier producers and ultimately as internationally acclaimed songwriters and artists. People’s History Museum: “ the national museum of democracy, telling the story of its development in Britain: past, present, and future.“ The reigning queen of all gentle observational humour. And Mrs Merton. Mrs Merton! Currently battling with cancer, we wish her and her firneds & family the best of wishes. Parliamentary reformIf you would prefer something of a more contemporary nature, then aluminium or acrylic panels can be a great alternative. Further information can be found here. Elsewhere – London, Liverpool or at Sunshine Playroom (Brighton) – there were regional differences. Football tops were popular but flares were avoided.
