I don't think you can get past initial setup without a connection and, I think, you will get on-screen nags if the connection is later removed. I will take the TV off the wall and attach a hard drive so the wife can pause, rewind etc and hook the skybox back up for watching Freeview and she then has options for recording and watching another channel.
