Franks, Norman L (2000). RAF Fighter Command Losses of the Second World War - Volume 3. Midland Publishing. pp. 20. ISBN 1-85780-093-1. The Indian Air Force (IAF) played a central role in Operation Jericho. Amidst the Army’s persistent struggle to dislodge rebel forces, the Indian Air Force (IAF) was summoned into action. Initially, the IAF’s primary objective was to facilitate the resupply of army installations, a task entrusted to Dakotas and Caribou transport aircraft, which were promptly mobilized from Guwahati and Jorhat. No one had imagined that the Union government would bomb its own territory. “It took us by surprise that the government had the courage to deploy jet fighters to bomb Aizawl that it dared not fly inside China or Pakistan,” said Remruata, a village council member. “Well, charity begins at home.”

Operation Jericho had been described by a military writer as an expression of confidence and clinical planning not witnessed hitherto fore in the Indian subcontinent. The Centre had decided to station another Assam Rifles battalion in the Hills, in addition to the one Assam Rifles battalion and a few BSF companies already present.

Many of the prisoners knew this night was probably their last on earth. Amiens Prison had seen a great many judicial murders and much Gestapo torture and brutality, so except for those about to die, executions were routine. Most of those who died within these walls were simply patriots, members of the French Resistance movement, agents, and ordinary people who helped their occupied country against the Germans and their own prostrate government at Vichy. They were held in a separate part of the prison, the “German side.” The rest of the prison housed ordinary criminals. Attempts were made to re-supply the Assam Rifles battalion with helicopters, but these were shot at by the Mizo rebels. Mizoram, nestled in the northeastern part of India, had been marred by insurgency and separatist movements for years. The Mizo National Front (MNF), led by Laldenga, was at the forefront of the secessionist movement, demanding an independent state of Mizoram. The region had become a hotbed of insurgency, leading to significant unrest and challenges for the Indian government. Operation Jericho TimelineBowman, Martin (2005) [1997].
