Exiled to live as a Low, sixteen-year-old Conrad refuses to become heir to his murderous uncle. But Meritocracy is a harsh and unforgiving rule on the floating island of Holmstead, and when his ailing mother is killed by monstrous gorgantauns, Conrad cuts a deal to save the only family he has left. To rescue his sister from his uncle's clutches, Conrad must enter the Selection of the Twelve Trades. I'm sorry, I suppose this was meant as romantic? It just made me start laughing uncontrollably. As did: The other characters are varied, there are human and many types of alien. The other characters are ESE crew and Thell'eons mainly. Lt Damian King did not give me a good feeling from the start, although he is supposed to be one of the good guys, he does not give me a good feeling and his behavior throughout the book is very rare. I hope in the next book Cassiel change her mind ... What can I say about the Thell'eons? .... They are the sexiest aliens in the whole universe. They have the perfect human constitution, super sexy and really hot. Or'ic is the Prime and I really like him but I do not know why I rather prefer Kell'an, it must be the green eyes. I also loved the romance that was woven throughout. There was just enough of it, and at least part of it was believable. That was the one area, actually, that didn't make as much sense to me as the rest of the book. Without giving anything away, some of the romance/relationship aspects were not convincing to me. I didn't understand how this relationship really got started or blossomed. There seemed to be no reason for it to. That said, there were other aspects that were completely believable, and you could see this (possible)love between two characters forming.

Some die during the gauntlet to win the chance to have their own skyship and crew. Not only is the competition dangerous, but his peers are blood thirsty to become Captain of the ship and rise in title and wealth. Some will do most anything to get there. Especially one particular person who is from a family that has bad blood between them and Conrad's for centuries. Alongside these well thought out characters is a rich and detailed world that is just epic. Gregson’s world building was just great and I really loved how he just interwove facts about the world into the narrative - little details about different islands eating different foods for instance was just a really nice touch. I definitely had lots of questions about the world as I was reading but I do appreciate the author’s decision to not info dump and rather show us the world (although I don’t mind the odd info dump and it might have been nice to have had a little more context to the wider world at some points). In addition, I hate how despite everything she sees to prove that she might not have been given accurate information and despite all the times she realizes that things were purposefully kept from her, she still clings to all those half-truths and lies even though she has evidence to the contrary, even though she has lived something different from that. (Side note: I apologize for being so vague, I’m trying to stay away from Spoilers, but I highly encourage you to read the book and come talk to me about it!). In a four-star review on London Theatre, our critic said"You'd need a heart of stone not to be moved by this generous portrait of humanity: a true homegrown triumph." Reading Sky’s End was a fun little sprint through dragon hunting. This is Book 1 with two more in the works.

EDIT (6/15/23): I've added content warnings at the bottom of the review to help inform readers if Sky's End is right for them, or for the teen in their life. Once the book starts going out into the world, let me know if there is anything else I should add. Cassiel Winters is on a mission to find her brother, and the only place she can do that is Earth’s Space Academy program. The odds are not in her favor though as secrets and lies are found on every corner, and Cassiel may not be able to trust those that are closets to her. She’s then thrust into a war that she may have little chance of getting out of, unless she plays her cards right.

I think many will like the freedom that being without a dish and more importantly the fixed cables & the main user base will switch In a time of typewriters and steam engines, Iris Winnow awaits word from her older brother, who has enlisted on the side of Enva the Skyward goddess. Alcohol abuse led to her mother’s losing her job, and Iris has dropped out of school and found work utilizing her writing skills at the Oath Gazette. Hiding the stress of her home issues behind a brave face, Iris competes for valuable assignments that may one day earn her the coveted columnist position. Her rival for the job is handsome and wealthy Roman Kitt, whose prose entrances her so much she avoids reading his articles. At home, she writes cathartic letters to her brother, never posting them but instead placing them in her wardrobe, where they vanish overnight. One day Iris receives a reply, which, along with other events, pushes her to make dramatic life decisions. Magic plays a quiet role in this story, and readers may for a time forget there is anything supernatural going on. This is more of a wartime tale of broken families, inspired youths, and higher powers using people as pawns. It flirts with clichéd tropes but also takes some startling turns. Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world. Ofcom have been investigating Sky's compliance with end of contract notifications since December 2020, almost a year after the regulation came into force. If you are even remotely a science fiction or alien fan, go buy this. Right now. You will not be disappointed. SKY'S END was a whirlwind of an adventure that kept me on my toes and had me reading all through the night. While the sector has doubled in size since the early 2000s, the proportion of PRS households has remained stable at around 19% or 20% since 2013 to 2014.Although the book has been published very recently, I'm sure that if people give it a chance, it would be one of the essential books of 2013. There is still no date for the second book in this series Sky's Surrender, but I cannot wait to read it.

Plummet into a kill-or-be-killed competition where a scrappy underdog hell-bent on revenge must claw his way to the top in this thrilling YA fantasy debut I really liked Cassiel. I liked that she was far from naturally talented, but that she tried her absolute best all the same. And I liked the fact that though she got a bit better, she never magically becomes top of the class. As someone who is equal parts malcoordinated and determined (and who has an incredibly fit and well-coordinated brother!) this felt like a quite believable portrayal of being somewhere that's really unsuited to your skills and trying to make the best of it. I also find the dynamics between siblings to be fascinated, so I enjoyed the fact that worry about her brother was a major driver.
