Letting it end there would be tragic. So, with the help of his best friends, the comfort of his haikus and lists, and even strange, surreal appearances by his hero, Oscar Wilde, Ken will find that love is worth more than the price of heartbreak. Katrina is so much more than trans, of course, and Aoki makes sure to portray this as well. One of my favourite bits of characterization in this book is how Katrina navigates Shizuka’s unexpected largesse, from her initial reaction of suspicion to her eventual desire to “save” Shizuka from her inescapable deal. Katrina’s indifference to the curse Shizuka plans to bestow upon her reflects the philosophy she has developed that everything comes with a cost, and in many ways, her story is a journey of finding the unconditional love she has never felt before.

Yka Aoki (she/her) is a poet, composer, teacher, and novelist whose books include He Mele a Hilo and two Lambda Award finalists, Seasonal Velocities and Why Dust Shall Never Settle Upon This Soul. Ryka's work has appeared or been recognized in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bustle, Autostraddle, PopSugar, and Buzzfeed. Her poetry was featured at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, and she was honored by the California State Senate for "extraordinary commitment to the visibility and well-being of Transgender people." Lothian, Alexis (January 17, 2023). "Ryka Aoki and Rivers Solomon win 2021 Otherwise Award! Honor List announced" . Retrieved May 28, 2023. This book is weird, most definitely. Despite having read the summary when I requested a copy for review, I was extremely surprised when the aliens showed up. I was reading the beginning, thinking, “OK, this girl plays the violin, this violin teacher needs a new student, I see where this is going,” and then, boom! Aliens. It was not what I was expecting at all. But it works. Nineteen-year-old Tara Muvvala didn’t mean to lead a double life. But her bone-deep aversion to math + a soul-deep desire to please her mother = her failing math grade + exploding food vlog ‘this masala life’. Danny Cheng has always known his parents have secrets. But when he discovers a taped-up box in his father’s closet filled with old letters and a file on a powerful Bay Area family, he realizes there’s much more to his family’s past than he ever imagined. It doesn’t matter who you are and who you identify as or where your diverse giftings may lie, Light From Uncommon Stars has something profound to say to you. a b Hoffer, Christian (April 7, 2022). Still, should your civilization survive, it will eventually find the same equation. And that will be your death sentence. For in that equation, there will be no forever, no eternity. Nothing.

The book brought me to tears . . . and bursts with love and insights on food, music, inheritance and transformation.”— The New York Times Light From Uncommon Stars was nominated for the 2022 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel, [4] 2022 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature, [5] and 2022 Hugo Award for Best Novel. [6] A dark but ultimately hopeful sci-fi exploration of the threats faced by queer people of color [and] a love letter to immigrant culture and the power people have to save each other . . . a beautiful, satisfying story of redemption and families of choice.”— Publishers Weekly Let it be music. If she could make it music, Katrina knew there would a place where she could breathe. A place where she could rest. Add to that cases of family disownment, poverty, homelessness, HIV. When a recent study of transgender youth reports that half their sample had entertained thoughts of suicide, and a quarter of them had made at least one attempt, I am not surprised.”

Funny, charming, and incredibly touching, this is a story about friendship, family, and the courage it takes to live your truth. I won't go into detail any more, but the lives of Shizuka, Katrina, and the alien captain Lan Tran all have their lives interconnected by chance, a wonderful narrative blooms. Each of these characters are so vibrant and have such different perspectives. The book employs a type of third person omniscient narrator, constantly jumping between perspectives and different thoughts. But I was always able to tell who was who based only on the way the character thought. As a child, Madden lived a life of extravagance, from her exclusive private school to her equestrian trophies and designer shoe-brand name. But under the surface was a wild instability. The only child of parents continually battling drug and alcohol addictions, Madden confronted her environment alone. Facing a culture of assault and objectification, she found lifelines in the desperately loving friendships of fatherless girls. I think girl,” the woman said. She didn’t bother whispering. So what if the kid could hear? They were speaking Cantonese; the young ones were either Americanized or learning Mandarin.

Survival against impossible extraterrestrial odds: Invasion ends its second season with hope … and not? (S2, E6-10) courtesy IMDB (c) Warner Bros. Family Entertainment) Halloween would not be Halloween without Scooby-Doo! somewhere in the hauntingly spooky and hilariously freaky mix and, of course, solving a great mystery which in the case of 1999’s Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost is literally bewitching one quaint New England town. The Continue Reading Here at Starrgate Donut, Lan and her family would safely wait out the fall of the Galactic Empire, continue their work, and live undisturbed, as long as—as Mr. Thamavuong stressed—they gave donuts to the police officers for free.Being a living trans person means vigilance. For a non-passing trans person, there is no safe space. It is not who we are kissing, but our very heights, our voices, and the size of our hands that catalyze hatred and violence. Forget activism; simply negotiating one’s world every day, constantly judging, adjusting, scanning one’s surroundings, and changing clothes to go from one role to another can be overwhelming. Katrina is very much a case in point as is Shizuka, with both characters, upon whom the fate of a number of people, not least themselves, rest, vivaciously alive in ways that take your soul, thankfully not to hell but to somewhere very real, grounded and accessibly human. If you are an inveterate reader, the odds are good, better than good actually, that fellow readers or close friends (sometimes, happily, they are both) that at some point they will recommend a book to you. A book, they will assure you with a mix of solemnity and enthusiasm, is Continue Reading Bingo Squares: Standalone (hard mode), Readalong Book (this one!), Urban Fantasy (hard mode), BIPOC Author, No Ifs, Ands, or Buts (hard mode), Family Matters (hard mode)
