Note that if 4 Wildlife Tokens are all the same, this is known as “ overpopulation“, and they are removed and replaced with 4 new randomly selected ones. It can also happen when there are 3 matching animals on offer. But in that case, it is the active player’s choice (aka yours in solo mode) as to whether those 3 are replaced or not. The premise of Cascadia is simple- collect hexes of different terrain that can support different animals, and score accordingly. The foxes, eagles, elk, bears and salmon all score in a different way depending on how you place them on your board; and with four different scoring cards for each animal, Cascadia has enough variety from play to play to keep interest. In addition, you also score depending on how large an area of one terrain is, with bonus points awarded for the person with the largest and second largest of each type. Each hex, with the exception of special ‘Keystone’ tiles, has two terrains printed on it so placement is crucial to your score at endgame. The active player draws tiles from the draw pile based on the number of players (2 tiles in a 2-player game, 3 tiles in a 3-4 player game). Players take turns placing their selected terrain tiles on their personal wilderness grid, matching terrain types and attempting to create habitats. Benjamin Abbott (2022-07-18). "Cascadia is board game of the year after Spiel des Jahres 2022 win". gamesradar . Retrieved 2022-07-22.Players can also complete habitats by placing the required Animal Tokens adjacent to the terrain tiles. After placing tiles, players score points for completed habitats according to the requirements on their habitat cards. Simple to learn, but hard to master – Cascadia is a dual-layer puzzle. There are a variety of goals that you can mix and match, creating a brand-new experience every time you play. Explore hundreds of unique puzzles and build beautiful terrain maps in competitive, solo, and family modes. You can collect special pinecone tokens by placing an animal on its own hex, called a ‘keystone’ tile, which allows you to change the sets drawn, but these aren’t common and still require a blind draw from the bag. Otherwise, if there are three or more of one animal type you can swap them. You can never change the drawn hex tiles, which can prevent you from continuing a terrain. I sit and look at the row of pairs, sometimes for a really long time. And a series of trade-offs and options run through my head. A Chinook Salmon swims around my brain suggesting this tile and pondering that objective. Everything about Cascadia feels calm. Methodical. Meditative. I almost feel like I am breathing in the fresh mountain air when playing. Manage Scoring Tokens: Keep an eye on your Scoring Tokens. They can be a valuable tiebreaker if players have the same score at the end. Try to collect as many as possible without compromising your main scoring strategy. a b "Accessible but Challenging, Cascadia Is One of Our Favorite Recent Board Games". pastemagazine.com. 2022-04-13 . Cascadia is a tile and token drafting game for 1-4 players. It involves a dual-layer puzzle that progresses over time as more habitats and wildlife are added to each player’s individual ecosystem. Players score points by creating the most harmonious spatial arrangements of wildlife, and also by creating the largest contiguous habitat corridors. If you counted 65 points you’re right on the nose. Only time will tell if that’s enough to win you the game! Final Thoughts on Cascadia

Game End: The game continues until all tiles have been placed on players’ wilderness grids. The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins. Ties are broken by the player with the most remaining Scoring Tokens. Additional Rules Spiel des Jahres 2022 winner is wildlife board game Cascadia". Dicebreaker. 2022-07-18 . Retrieved 2022-07-22. Rules are simple - take two adjacent cards from the dynamic city grid and add them to your expanding city. Use your resource cards and bonuses to construct building cards that require specific combinations. Build special civic structures to multiply your city’s points and be the top urban planner! Balance Expansion and Optimization: While expanding your wilderness grid is important, ensure that you’re optimizing your existing habitats as well. Completing additional habitats often yields more points than simply adding terrain tiles.Through two rounds (twilight and moonlight) players compete to collect the strongest sets of magical items like firebird feathers, creature skulls, glowing mushrooms, mysterious eggs, and rare herbs. These items have value when collected in specific sets, but can also be combined to fulfill recipes needed for concoctions, scoring you even more prestige!

Nocturne is a puzzly spatial bidding and set collection game set in a whimsical moonlit forest illustrated by Beth Sobel! The geographic region of North America known as Cascadia encompasses some (or all) of 8 US states (Northern California and Nevada, Northwestern Wyoming, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Alaska) as well as the Canadian province British Columbia and Yukon territory. Stretching for more than 2,500 miles and encompassing nearly 1.4 million square miles, it contains over 75 distinct ecoregions with an astonishing number of plants, animals, and habitats. It’s also stunningly beautiful. In Cascadia, which is set in the Cascadia region of the Pacific Northwest, players select one of the four available combinations of habitat and wildlife tokens to add to their existing habitat tokens. If three or four wildlife tokens are identical, players may choose to replace the four wildlife tokens with new ones. Habitat tokens must be placed adjacent to an existing habitat token, whereas a wildlife token are placed on a habitat token with the matching terrain. After each turn, habitat and wildlife tokens are replenished; once all habitat tokens are used, the game ends, and players earn points based on contiguous habitat tile corridor groups and varying wildlife scoring cards with different scoring goals for each wildlife depending on their behaviour. For example, victory points are rewarded for bears if their wildlife tokens are grouped together, but foxes gain victory points based on a combination of prey species. The game also has additional scenarios and minor goal alterations. [1] [2] Randy Flynn in 2022 Reception [ edit ]

From the team that brought you the smash hit Point Salad, Point City is a fast and fun card-drafting engine-building game for the whole family! There are over 150 unique building cards, so you can create a completely different city each and every time you play! Wow, January is a surprisingly long month! Takes me by surprise every year. However, this month I made use of all those long drab days by playing board games! I played 56 different board games logging a personal best of 106 plays in one month! The post-Christmas period saw me play 17 new-to-me games and all of them were absolutely brilliant. The downside to this is that it makes choosing the game of the month for January a really tough decision. I narrowed it down to five different games, most months each would’ve taken the accolade easily.
