Let’s first make sure we know the difference between a body of art and a series . Really, there isn’t much of a difference, it’s more of a nuance. A series of artworks usually have a very obvious investigation or tie. For example, someone might decide to create caricature portraits of political figures. Because they are all about political figures (perhaps even specific to one country, we’ll say the USA), this would be considered a series. When people hear the term portfolio artists can also hear: business, rigid, limitations. What if creating a portfolio actually gave you greater creative freedom? Its rigidity does not simply affect access, but it continues to dictate from within the work of artists. The traditional market almost forces artists to keep making the same works that are instantly sellable and recognisable, so it doesn’t actually allow any room for innovation. That’s what we want to be here for.”

From Body of Art Understand all art via one canvas - the human body If you have a passion for this style of art and want to use pointillism as a way to tell story or share imagery about your family DO IT. Whether regarded as a temple and honored as a sacred vessel or treated as an object to test, wield, or destruct, the body was placed on a pedestal and became a literal (rather than just appropriated, imagined, or created by the artist's hand) collaborator in the art making process. This focus so narrowly directed toward the body, ultimately forced viewers to hone a spotlight on their own physicality and its role in their fleeting existence. Natalia LL. Sztuka i Energia / Art. And Energy, Muzeum Narodowe we Wrocławiu / National Museum in Wrocław, 8 XII 1993 – 27 I 1994, p. 37.

I currently have one body of work that showcases white women from the 40s training for traditionally male job roles because the men were at war. I'm also now painting a group of women who are tattoo artists today. These works will look nothing alike because my models are very different, but there is still overlap in theme and artistic choices. But they are separate bodies of art.Ultimately, you can spend way too much time stressing about creating a specific style for your art rather than creating. The only way to develop a unique voice is by making a lot of art. That leads me to the first benefit of creating a body of art: Challenge Your Skill and Work Ethic Following Piece, Vito Acconci (1969)". The Metropolitan Museum of Art. You still have 8 paintings in the first style you explored. And you worked at it for a while, spending time to “figure it out” before the boredom set in. Digging deeper is usually when I get to a more interesting connection or unique approach that “up levels” my work. The editors of Body of Art...had a daunting amount of material from which to choose for their survey of the human body across centuries and cultures. They have done so with real imagination, deftly mixing the old...with the new...and juxtaposing them in themes... The effects – and the similarities and differences – are continually surprising.' – The Sunday Times Body art diffused the veil between artist and artwork by placing the body front and center as actor, medium, performance, and canvas. Lines were erased between message and messenger or creator and creation, giving new meaning to, and amplifying the idea of, authentic first person perspective.Creating a series of artworks actually builds freedom into your creative process. Yes, you heard me. FREEDOM. Let’s say you have one idea or style you play around with in your art. By the end you have 8 paintings. You now feel bored by the idea of continuing so you stop and start something new, which investigates textiles and painting. If life is the greatest form of art, then it seems only natural for artists to use the physical body as a medium. This is exactly what many Performance artists did to express their distinctive views and make their voices heard in the newly liberated social, political, and sexual climate that emerged in the 1960s. It was a freeing time where artists felt empowered to make art ever more personal by dropping traditional mores of art making and opted to using themselves as living sculpture or canvas. This resulted in direct confrontation between artist and audience, producing a startlingly intimate new way to experience art. Some four decades later Rebecca Horn started making what she called ‘body sculptures’ – prostheses and masks extending and restricting the body. In 1968, while a student, she read Jean Genet’s semi-autobiographic novel The Thief’s Journal 1949, recounting his travels through 1930s Europe where he received an education in thievery mentored by the one-armed Stilitano, which became a key reference point for her. Horn’s Arm Extensions 1968 bandage the body and make the upper limbs scrape the floor, Pencil Mask 1972 enables drawing with the face, Scratching Both Walls at Once 1974–5 allows the arms to reach across a room. Like prostheses, her supplements are always for a specific person – and they fit into custom-made suitcases, not unlike those designed for medical equipment. Rather than aiding, though, her additions encumber movement, echoing Schlemmer’s choreography.
