Description

Sony has taken full advantage of its new high-brightness panel to deliver not just easily its best OLED TV, but also the most all-round spectacular OLED picture quality to date. Certainly no other OLED TV has delivered such an exciting demonstration of the joys of high dynamic range pictures – at least when it comes to the ‘range’ part of the HDR label.

The ratio between the horizontal and the vertical side of the display. Some of the standard and widely used aspect ratios are 4:3, 5:4, 16:9 and 16:10. We are reviewing the 65-inch version of the Sony BRAVIA XR A90J, but the general performance should be the same for the other screen sizes. Three-way stand is only available on the 85” Class model. 75” Class and 65” Class models have two-way stand with standard and raised positions. Actual look may differ depending on TV size and type of cables used. Retested 1080p VRR range to see if there were still the same issues with latest firmware, and changed the PS5 VRR test to 'Yes' because it supports it. The Sony A90J can nearly take full advantage of the Xbox Series S|X consoles. It only supports Dolby Vision gaming at 60Hz, not at 120Hz, though, and the TV doesn't support 1440p @ 120Hz. After a firmware update to version PKG6.5660.0668NAA, the TV now supports both VRR and ALLM.

What Is the Sony A90J?

As well as objectively giving you a much more HDR experience that even holds up with very aggressively mastered HDR titles, the extra full screen brightness the 65A90J can deliver ensures that you also experience way more of that natural, real world experience that HDR is at heart all about. As of 11/18/20, Cognitive Processor XR cross-analyses multiple picture elements combined with focal points; recreating human perspective. Verified by Strategy Analytics. We uploaded the latest brightness measurements and uniformity photos for the Accelerated Longevity Test. The sound quality from the Acoustic Surface Audio+ is still superb on the A90J with sound quality that will rival the use of a mid-range soundbar (without a subwoofer). The effect of sound coming directly from the centre of the screen adds to the experience and with the use of high-quality woofers and the screen actuators vibrating the rest of the panel to turn it into a 65-inch speaker, is still revolutionary in the OLED TV market.

Information about the maximum horizontal viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality. The Sony A90J has good HDR brightness, good enough to make bright highlights pop. However, there isn't much consistency across scenes with different luminance levels due to the TV's Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL). It performs similarly to the LG G1 OLED, but it's not as bright as the LG G2 OLED. Warming up the TV doesn't significantly impact the HDR brightness. The amount of times the TV keeps pointing out that a particular picture quality change might impact power consumption is quite infuriating too - though I guess this affects me as someone testing the TV’s features out much more than it would a regular user, who’s unlikely to change picture settings all that often. Information about the maximum vertical viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality.

Specifications

Two of the HDMI ports, at least, are made to the latest high bandwidth HDMI 2.1 standard, and support 4K in HDR at 120Hz, plus auto low latency mode gaming features. Frustratingly, though, as with previous Sony TVs, you can’t have Dolby Vision and 4K/120Hz at the same time. The HDMI set up menu give you an either/or situation, with HD 120Hz or 4K 60Hz being your only options with Dolby Vision active. With the Xbox Series X now rolling out Dolby Vision in games, including at 120fps, you're potentially missing out here.
