The two fight like a married couple, and many of the jokes revolve around what looks to their friends like a romantic relationship. The series begins after Doug and Carrie have been married for 3 years, and how they met is somewhat unclear due to continuity issues.

She is often seen arriving at the Heffernan home to pick up Arthur but is also a family friend of the Heffernans. Their lives are plagued by the demands of Arthur; so much so that they eventually hire Holly, a professional dog walker, to spend time with him as she walks dogs in the park.
