I really enjoyed this book. From the first few lines, everything about it is drenched in the love that Brister so obviously has for her family, which is beautiful. The way she writes highlights her love for them even when, at times, things are (quite literally) shitty, and you just can't underestimate how heartwarming and reassuring that is. There’s a lot of weird pop culture references. For example, there’s a rambling thought about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West... I didn't have any set expectations when I went into reading this book, which is a good thing, but it wound up just being an okay read for me. It tells the story of one young man, Jenry, on his quest to find out more about who he is, and the man who was his father.

Coraline | Book Analysis 10 Important Characters in Coraline | Book Analysis

I would not recommend this book to women who have just had a baby and who might be having a difficult time. Worried her husband, Peter, would take her baby away — she flees with baby Chloe —after answering an add to work as a live-in employee -as an archivist having once worked as a child librarian—for an author named Schuyler Bennett (Sky), moving to Catskills (from Westchester).... She wishes to trap Coraline in the parallel universe (the Other Mother’s world) and capture her soul (as she has captured other children’s souls). She controls everything in the universe and is used to things going her way. This is why she is unable to stand it when Coraline defies her. The Other Mother progressively becomes more deceptive and cunning throughout the novella. She does not hold up her side of the bargain with Coraline and attempts to cheat her way to Coraline’s soul. Ultimately, she is defeated by Coraline, and peace is restored to the universe. The Other Mother is played by Teri Hatcher in the movie Coraline.I think the writing was very good and the flow was a bit off here and there. I had to re-read a few paragraphs and sentences a few times to just make sure I understood where things were going. This book is so heartbreaking at times. You get to see how Michael's relationship with his mother has changed. You also get to see what was going on with his relationship with his father before he passed too. There's a lot of missing puzzle pieces that don't make sense until you get to the end of the book. Winston explodes Jenry's world with one question: Why is the young man so interested in his son Jasper? It was Winston's daughter, Juliet, who was his mother's lover. Juliet is the parent he should be looking for-his another mother." Similarly, the book ends with Coraline succeeding to escape the other world and trap the hand in the well.

The Other Mother by Jen Brister | Waterstones

Didn't know a lot about Jen Bristow before listening to this book. Knew she was funny, and am fairly sure I knew she had at least one son, having caught part of a set she did on Live At The Apollo. For what this is worth, also knew she was part of a group of comedians I instinctively like - a pal of Sara Pascoe, Sarah Millican, Suzi Ruffel and Jessica Fostekew. I requested this book because I had read – and adored – the author’s previous book: Memoir of an Imaginary Friend. In fact, I would say that is one of the best books I’ve ever read and is definitely one of my favourite books. The doll was first seen modeled after the sweet ghost girl; it had dark brown pigtails with magenta bows, a pink dress with a ribbon, pearl earrings and a flower accessory. But The Beldam undoes its appearance and modifies it. As days go by after Daphnie's arrival at Catskills, she starts to feel more relaxed in her new surroundings, she accustoms to her new role, her new job, and a new employer, Sky. Daphne also learns about an accident that took place many years ago in the tower, that is still a part of her employer's residence. The person who was involved in the accident happens to be a patient in the nearby psychiatric hospital, and a former patient of Sky's father. Daphne starts to not
