Qxd3– This move prevents the King’s intrusion into h3 while satisfying the producer’s insistence that the first move of the sequence be a capture. This also puts Harry’s piece on a3 in some dramatic danger. IM Silman is coming on strong here, smashing a poor pawn to bits because he wanted to make the White Queen the villain of the scene and a piece to be feared. This set was never made to play professional chess play so it would not be fair to criticize it for not being suitable for a regulation game of chess. The set is not good enough for serious gameplay due to the pieces being too lightweight and the board feeling slightly cramped up. If they had made the board a little bigger and added a bit of weight to the chess pieces, the set would have been perfect. That being said, if you have bought this set due to it being a “Wizard’s” chess set, it does the job perfectly. In the 1985–1986 school year, Professor Minerva McGonagall played a game of Wizard's Chess when being interviewed by Jacob's sibling for their presentation at that year's Teacher Appreciation Celebration. The game underwent several phases, with McGonagall eventually winning the game. She gave one of her chess sets to Jacob's sibling as a memento. [7] An interesting thing about this game chess set which makes it different from other Harry Potter sets is its unique body design. There is going to be so much joy playing this game because every fan knows Hogwarts houses are always coming at each other; what better way is it to play this game than on a chess set? The game is best played amidst friends because of its gameplay, rather than at home. The chess pieces are made out of die-cast zinc and PVC so apart from being extremely beautiful, they are extremely sturdy as well. Since they are metal, the pieces are very heavy and look exactly like the ones in the movie. The chessmen resemble the original pieces from the movie and are highly detailed. Different pieces can be seen carrying different weapons just like in the movie.

In the position shown on the board, play would have continued as follows (moves written in algebraic notation): The game of chess actually plays a significant role in the Harry Potter books and movies, right from the very beginning. Several characters are known to play wizard’s chess, including Gryffindor students Seamus Finnigan and Percy Weasley. Ron Weasley is also seen to be playing a game of wizard’s chess on several different occasions – he even beats Harry a few times!

A lot of thought actually went into this larger than life wizard’s chess scene, and there was a lot of work going into it behind the scenes (apart from the construction of those giant pieces!) International Master Jeremy Silman was the mind behind the chess scene in the Harry Potter movie, and he is the one who designed the chess position we see on the screen and all of its subsequent moves. Unfortunately for chess enthusiasts, a lot of his moves were cut from the final version of the movie, which resulted in moves that didn’t seem to make much sense to those of us who are familiar with the rules of chess. On 2 September 1890, Imelda Reyes could be seen in the Slytherin common room spectating, and offering unsolicited advice on, a Wizard's Chess game between a Slytherin boy and a girl whom he was playing. [5] 1980s [ ] In the 1995–1996 school year, there were multiple Wizard's Chess champions at Hogwarts: at least five Gryffindor champions in the Gryffindor common room, the Slytherin champion in the Great Hall, and the Ravenclaw champion in the Library. [4] Casual games [ ] 1890s [ ]

Players moved their pieces by speaking the name of the piece and the square it was to move to by algebraic notation. For example, 'Knight to E5'. Aside from the self-moving pieces, the rules of Wizard's Chess were exactly the same as Muggle chess. The moving pieces seemed to be reasonably sentient, as seen when Harry Potter began learning how to play the game, he used Seamus Finnigan's pieces, which offered him conflicting advice because they knew that he was not a good or experienced player. But, in the Harry Potter universe, chess is more than just a fun way to pass the time- it can also be deadly! Which is perhaps unsurprising, since many things that are completely innocuous in our world can be deadly in the Harry Potter universe, including willow trees, mermaids, staircases, and so much more. Hogwarts is a surprisingly dangerous place! Ronald Weasley owned a Wizard's Chess set which he inherited from his grandfather. Unlike many of his hand-me-down possessions, the second-hand chess set was advantageous as the pieces trusted him. When Harry Potter played with Seamus Finnigan's chess men, they did not trust his judgement and offered him advice. [1] In an iconic scene from the first Harry Potter film, The Philosopher’s Stone, Hermione enters the Great Hall at Hogwarts to find Harry and Ron Weasley settling in for a ‘barbaric’ game of Wizard’s Chess.

Or you could be just someone looking to buy a chess set for their kids, or grandkids. Either way, I hope my hands-on experience with buying these chess sets will save you some time and money and help you make the right choice. This eats a pawn (thereby making the producer happy!) and prevents the Knight's intrusion into h3. She also threatens to capture Harry on a3! Note that I had the Queen make the capture because I wanted to do everything possible to turn this piece into something the young fans hated. In other words, I wanted to turn the White Queen into the scene's villain. Well, Potterheads can raise their wands in delight. You can now recreate the famous chess scene at home with the new Wizard’s Edition Chess Set. This Harry Potter themed chess set from The Noble Collection is a cool, fun, chess set that will keep the kids entertained and works perfectly as a gift. For hardcore Harry Potter fans and chess nerds as well, this set is the perfect combination – a true collector’s item. Original Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone Movie Chess Set The chess pieces of this set are made up of moderately heavy plastic mixed with another material that provides some flexibility. It’s not by any means the highest quality but still durable enough for kids to handle (or mishandle). In case you drop a piece on the floor and it breaks, you may not be able to use the ‘reparo’ spell to repair it. So, I would advise handling the pieces with care. This themed Harry Potter Wizard Chess Set is manufactured by The Noble Collection under license from Warner Brothers which means you get an exact replica of the original chess set from the Sorcerer’s Stone movie. Of course, this chess scene was not described in such detail in the book, either. Perhaps it’s because J.K. Rowling didn’t have an International Master chess player consulting with her while she was writing her first book of a series that would, unbeknownst to her at the time, become one of the best selling children’s novels in history. If she had known that, or had the help of a chess professional on her side, she likely would have included more detail on the chess scene. We think IM Silman’s position would be the perfect addition to the book, though it may make non chess player’s eyes glaze over.
