Description

Unfortunately this is nothing like Sony’s newer GM primes and furthermore plagued by severe sample variation. If you have a good sample it gets the job done, but I cannot recommend going down the rabbit hole of finding one of those golden copies. The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN Art Lens is compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras, including APS-C sensor format models, and it is also available in the L mount (Sigma, Panasonic, Leica). This Samyang is the cheaper version of the Sony FE 35mm 1.4 ZA in many ways: similar size, similarly high CA, similar questions regarding sample variation. No button or aperture ring and according to some reports the manual focus experience is really bad with this lens. While the Sony lens is the easy choice from the performance standpoint, paying for it is the hurdle.

The exposure of the f/1.4 to f/2.0 corner crops has been lifted in post to reveal more details. portrait distanceThe Sony lens has slightly less peripheral shading at f/1.4 and stronger shading at narrow apertures. Image stabilization: No optical stabilization of the lens. The Sony A7 or Nikon Z bodies provide built-in sensor-shift stabilization. Same with the Sony ZA and the Zeiss Batis. [0] In summation, this is a big, heavy lens (you already knew that!), but also one that is nicely made and seems ready to handle professional-grade use. 40ART Autofocus and Video Performance Like all Sigma Art glass, the 40mm F1.4 is built to last. Treat this lens as an investment and it should outlive several camera bodies. Should you buy it?

Lateral (or transverse) CA (Chromatic Aberration) refers to the unequal magnification of all colors in the spectrum. The new motor also enables high focus-following performance, ensuring that the decisive moment is not missed." [Sigma] It has a minimum focusing distance of 40cm /15.7in and a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:5.3, and an aperture range of f/1.4-f/16. The lens has a dust- and splash-proof structure and there is a special water- and oil-repellent coating on the front lens element.

Nocturnal Performance That’s Lights Out

I didn’t test the autofocus for sports, but I feel confident that the lens will serve well for the more typical purposes of weddings, events, portraits, general purpose, or street. Autofocus is fast, quiet, and confident: a great combination! Yes. It’s expensive, but the Sigma 40mm Art is a wonderful lens that will impress even the most seasoned photographers.
