Description

There will be a particular focus on the use of open-source data, conducting climate risk assessments, and tools for decision-making under uncertainty. AGWA’s small Secretariat performs many of the day-to-day and programmatic activities, including direct engagement with our 2100+ members. Simply put, water resilience means the ability of water-related policies, plans and investments to cope with climate-related impacts.

AGWA) - europa.eu Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA) - europa.eu

AgWA is an autonomous voluntary partnership that includes a large set of networks and institutions from Africa and elsewhere, all of which bring specific Agricultural Water Management (AWM) capacities to the Partnership. Water is widely recognized as both a major component of many climate-related disasters — the “teeth” of climate change. The mission of AGWA is to provision tools, partnerships, guidance, and technical assistance to improve effective decision making, action, governance, and analytical processes in water resources management, focusing on climate adaptation and mitigation. The Water Tracker for National Climate Planning includes both a self-assessment Questionnaire and a Guidance Document.

The Water Tracker: Find the Water to Build Resilience!

Unfortunately, water is very rarely described as a resource that connects sectors, and very few NDCs or NAPs acknowledge that climate change itself may alter water use and management patterns, so that shifts in irrigation commitments may grow to be incoherent with both water-intensive clean energy investments and expanding water supply and hygiene needs for rural communities and the urban poor. AGWA works with and through its member network to develop and crowdsource solutions across disciplines, institutions, and sectors. In AGWA, we have learned that water resilience provides an essential, informative compass for most adaptation and resilience strategies, policies, and actions, with some critical climate mitigation co-benefits.

In Africa, only 7 percent of arable land is irrigated, with an even lower 4 percent in sub-Saharan Africa, compared to 38 percent in Asia.

Mark your calendars for the first in a new IPDC webinar series on "Futureproofing: Water and Climate Adaptation. His work explores how we define, develop, and accelerate the uptake of our emerging set of best practices for climate resilience. In addition to this, a recent study about the “institutional architecture” for Agricultural Water Management (AWM) in Africa found that there are numerous African institutions with AWM capacities and expertise, but none, nor any existing coalition of institutions, can offer the full range of specialties and degree of coordination needed to meet the challenges faced by African stakeholders. How national climate plans address water, and how it is managed as a resource when these plans are implemented, can make the difference between project success or failure. From unpredictable rainfall patterns to extreme floods and droughts, water is widely recognized at the forefront of many climate disasters — the “teeth” of climate change.
