Jacob's sibling had the option of becoming an Animagus during their time as Hogwarts. If they succeeded, they were unregistered, at least temporarily, during the school year. However, they had the option of registering with the Ministry during their free time. [26] A wizard's Animagus form may reflect their corporeal Patronus; Minerva McGonagall was one such case, both being a known cat Animagus [12] and having a cat Patronus. [13] [14] Apparently, the form one's Patronus took may have been determined by the same inner-traits as the Animagus form, as shown with Minerva McGonagall. In some cases items such as spectacles may affect the animal’s appearance. For example, both Minerva McGonagall and Rita Skeeter wear spectacles in human shape, and these are not only transformed with the Animagus but in these two cases form part of the resulting animal’s markings ( PA6, GF37 ). In Harry Potterand the Goblet of Fire, we are introduced to Rita Skeeter, the reporter from The Daily Prophet who interviews the Triwizard Tournament champions. Interestingly, she seems to be aware of a lot of private details from Harry’s life, something that Hermione Granger observes to be a strange occurrence. Eventually, she does some research and espionage to find out that Rita Skeeter is an Animagus herself, not recorded in the Animagus Registry and therefore committing an illegal offense. Her Animagus form is that of a beetle which she uses to listen in to conversations of wizards and witches without getting caught.At the Uagadou School of Magic in Africa, students can become Animagi at the age of only 14 years old. It was also revealed that students from the school were able to turn into elephants and cheetahs. During the 1990–1991 school year, the British Ministry of Magic arrested Olivier Kikkert, an unregistered frog Animagus. [27] The Animagus form almost always matches the witch or wizard’s Patronus. While the form of your Patronus can change during the course of your life, there is no recorded instance of the Animagus form also changing to match it. As the potion could only be consumed during a lightning storm, prospective Animagi might have to recite the incantation for weeks, months, and even years. Failure to adhere to the daily recitations of the incantation would result in failure of becoming a fully functional Animagus, [1] though the precise consequences were unclear. At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the theory of Animagus transfiguration was taught about in third year. The Ministry of Magic made it law that you had to register your form with them but a majority of Wizards did not do so. Those who did not register would be sentenced to time in Azkaban prison. If a wizard performs the Animagus spell twice, can he or she then change into two different types of animal? Or would it change the type of animal he or she could transfigure into? Why? The (many) things to be wary of…

During the 1980s, Talbott Winger, an unregistered Eagle Animagus, attended Hogwarts. He refused to register out of fear for his personal safety as his parents fought against Lord Voldemort and were killed by Death Eaters in retaliation. They were identified at least partly due to his mother, a Swan Animagus, being registered. Professor McGonagall was aware of Talbott's status and respected his decision. Some animals are attributed with different traits in various cultures. For example, Mongolian culture has historically revered wolves, attributing them as the ultimate hunters who can only die by human hand if the wolf consents to death as wolves are considered to be inherently superior to mankind. In other cultures, wolves are vilified and treated as cowardly, blood thirsty, and loathsome beasts. The first transformation is usually ‘uncomfortable and frightening. Clothing and items such as glasses or jewellery meld to the skin and become one with fur, scales or spikes.’ If you make it through the process, you will have the ability to become an animal whenever you choose. However, while you can decide to become an animal, you can’t decide which animal you will become. James Potter was able to turn into a stag, which is also the same form that his Patronus Charm takes the form of. Each Animagus bore an identifying mark on their animal form that was caused by some visible trait on their human body. This could be physical, like their dental structure, or acquired, like glasses. Both Minerva McGonagall and Rita Skeeter had markings on their Animagus forms caused by their spectacles. If an Animagus underwent a major physical change, such as the loss of a limb, their animal form would reflect that, as in the case of Peter Pettigrew missing a finger, and his rat form missing a toe.
