BenRiach The Original Ten is a great intro to BenRiach, Speyside and Single Malt Scotch in general and I’d happily recommend it to new Scotch drinkers as a way to get to know the basic profile of Scotch whisky. It’s a tasty easy drinker and the perfect gateway into the rest of what Scotland has to offer. Highland peat is lighter than its Islay counterpart. The region has more forests and consequently has peat made of tree roots and hardier plant life. Many peated whisky distillers, both within and without Scotland, source their peat from both regions for more available flavor profiles. Mothballed in 1900, but reopened for distillation in 1965, Benriach is a distillery on the up after a difficult start. It was originally opened at the end of the 19th century by John Duff, owner of Longmorn, and continued to provide malt to their sister distillery until the 1960s.

It’s a basic malt, and I definitely want more out of it, but for being an entry-level malt at 43% it’s nice. Nothing off or unpleasant about it, just light and soft – which isn’t a bad thing at all. We need these on the shelves and in our lineups. Scotland, home of many bogs, has a great natural resource in peat. The initial use for peat in whisky was a practical one. After malting, barley needs to be dried before the next step. This is a decent whisky. It’s not crazy deep or explosive, but it is warm, tasty and easy to mix with. Malty, fruity, vanilla, toffee, earthy hay and herbal notes with touches of banana bread and dried apricots. Aroma is a tad waxy, not Clyenlish level, and has a nice earthy-malty character that sits alongside a warm fruitiness that comes through like a gourmet fruit candy; Palate is rather basic but is good and fruity with a strong malty presence that’s super easy to sip and enjoy; Finish is warm, soft and fruity. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. You are responsible for all activities through your account. The jamminess drys into tobacco and a hint of vanilla. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.

Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars. Not all peat is the same. The organic matter that decays influences the type of peat, and thus the flavor of it. The isles, with Islay being the biggest and most prominent peat producer, tend to have more heather and low-lying plant life. This results in the biggest and boldest peat flavors. This is where peat comes in. The peat is burned to create smoke underneath the malting floors to stop the germination. The influence of the smoke on the barley leaves that signature smokiness. Peat smoke was one of the only methods available to initial Scotch whisky makers.

BenRiach 10 year old – review

Following a series of ownership changes (including Chivas and Pernod), and a small number of unremarkable single malt releases, Benriach was bought by an independent consortium in 2004 and has since gone on to produce one of the industry’s most diverse range of whiskies.
