Molenda, Mike; Les Paul (2007). The Guitar player book: 40 years of interviews, gear, and lessons from the world's most celebrated guitar magazine. Hal Leonard. p.187. ISBN 978-0-87930-782-0.

While the delay sound itself is something to behold, many players equally adored models such as the legendary EP-3 for the sound of its preamp. Adding something extra, famous namessuch as Eddie Van Halen would sometimes rely solely on the preamp section to add moregirth and sparkle to hisguitar sound. The original Echoplex EP-3 is an incredible delay system that is loved not only for its delay but its preamp tone. MXR have taken it as a challenge to bring that delay in to a small digital pedal that can easily be put on to any pedalboard. The EP103 delay is the result and it sounds absolutely stunning. The EP 101 recreates the magical tone-shaping ability of the original echoplex by recreatingthe samesignal path complete with a Field-effect Transistor (FET) so that you get the same response. The Pedal has a single gain control knob that offers up to +11dB of boost, with light asymmetrical clipping at higher settings for some natural grit when you push it hard.Battle's final consulting with Market yielded the EM-1 Groupmaster, which offered a four-channel input mixer section and a mono output section. Dissatisfied with the transistor-minded direction Maestro was taking, Battle left the company. Guitar Player. pp.110–17. The EP-3 is such a hard piece of kit to emulate without using massive analogue circuits just due to how much went into it. Because MXR have worked out how to not only capture the tone but expand on its capability using digital tools this pedal is incredibly small and portable. You can even add that typical aged tape warble with the Age control.

The Echoplex Preamp runs on standard 9-volt power and contains power management circuitry to guarantee constant headroom performance throughout the normal life of a 9-volt battery. With a heavy-duty Phase 90-sized housing, a replica EP-3 knob, true bypass switching and a status LED, the Echoplex Preamp is built to take a beating on the roadso you can leave your fragile vintage piece at home. Original Echoplex units are among some of the most sought after piecesof guitar gear around. Renowned for their magical tones, Echoplexes produce warm, modulated delay repeats that gradually deteriorate over time. That's where the EP103 Echoplex Delay comes in. It's the size of a Phase 90, and it delivers the EP-3's legendary tones with a simple control interface and a hi-fi all-analog dry path. The Delay control sets the time between repeats—from 65ms to 750ms—the Sustain control sets the number of repeats, and the Volume control sets the output level of your repeats.
