Description

In 2011, Kay published "B", a short hardcover book containing the titular poem, which was originally written in 2007.

On March 3, 2011, she performed at the TED conference in Long Beach, California as part of a series entitled "Beauty, Imagination, Enchantment. Regardless, nothing can prepare you for the poems you haven't read yet, and there are quite a few of them. There are poems about so many different subjects here all carefully constructed and eloquently written. Some of the poems are not new to those who have followed her videos on YouTube and seen her TEDtalks, so they will be accustomed to infamous pieces such as B, Shosholoza, Montauk and Private Parts. I have been following Sarah Kay since my first year in college (2012) when I first watched her in Ted. Another being Hand-Me-Downs, shows how we can inherit traits from our family, and it may not always necessarily be a beautiful thing. I highly recommend this one, even if you are not fan of poetry, you will surely love this one in a heartbeat!

Following the success of her breakout poem, "B," Sarah Kay releases her debut collection of poetry featuring work from the first decade of her career. Although Kay works primarily in spoken word poetry, she has had written poems published in magazines such as Foundling Review, DamselFly Press, and decomP literary magazine.

A number of the poems in the book can be found presented on YouTube, though many are being introduced to the world for the first time here on paper.

In No Matter the Wreckage, Sarah manages to give us more of a glimpse into her thoughts and experiences, and each and every one, some sounding like simple and mundane actions which are given a breath of life you would never expect, and others such as Subway, a piece which brings you to the underground of New York and illustrates a perfectly a simple picture of what it feels like to take the subway while it is raining. Both fresh and wise, Kay’s poetry allows readers to join her on the journey of discovering herself and the world around her.

She is unafraid to bring you into her world, and bares her soul for the world to see, and that it is alright to be imperfect. Only so many into space, before you forget that words are sometimes used for things other than filling emptiness. Building on the triumph of her acclaimed poem, "B," Sarah Kay unveils her debut poetry collection, a compilation of pieces spanning her first decade as a poet.

Kay is also a successful educator, who co-directs Project VOICE (Vocal Outreach Into Creative Expression). She is an education advocate and keynote speaker for education organizations like NAIS, ECIS, AISA, and IBO, among others.

When the weight gives, and all that extra rope comes hurtling towards you, how even though you've won, you still end up with muddy knees and burns on your hands?
