Description

M. Richards, was eventually published by Noel Carrington, brother of the artist Dora Carrington and editor at Country Life Books. An account of the group of pre war modern British artists who worked ( and played ) together within a network, including Edward Bawden, Barnett Freedman, Enid Marx and others, all influenced by the teaching of Paul Nash at the Royal College of Art.

In a career curtailed by an early death, Ravilious also played a significant role as a designer; Powers argues that Ravilious showed how decoration and historical reference could find a place in the reform of the applied arts whilst simultaneously renewing a sense of national identity. There’s a gentle and quirky wit to his pictures: the policeman twirls his truncheon much as a child might twirl an imaginary wand; the string of helium balloons sold in the park, an outsized illustration which seems to capture the way a child might prioritize its visual scene, reaches higher than the tallest of palm trees. It concentrates on the work rather that the life, although there is a useful chronology of the main events - and the exhibitions - at the back of the book, along with an extensive bibliography. After a few years the family moved to North London and here, interrupted only by his schooling at Christ’s Hospital, Hastings, Vaughan would live for the rest of his life. The book tells the story of the English hill monuments and chalk figures on the Downlands of Southern England, illustrated with the paintings that Ravilious produced of the chalk paths, river paths and hilltops of Sussex and Wiltshire. In 1951 Trevelyan married Mary Fedden (see artists) and the couple travelled widely, in Europe, Africa, India and the USA, before settling in London, Durham Wharf, on the banks of the River Thames, where he set up his etching studio. Due to the scarcity of the book and the increased interest in Ravilious' work, the High Street book is generally sold in its entire published form. As a student he visited Fry’s (1910) Post-Impressionist exhibition at the Grafton Galleries, and whilst he was enthralled by the use of colour, he judged the work neglectful of content.

Keith Vaughan Keith Vaughan was born at Selsey, Sussex (1912) to Eric George Story Vaughan, a civil engineer, and his wife Gladys Regina Marian Mackintosh. Often described as a particularly ‘English’ artist, key to his style was an ability to convey in watercolour the mild vagaries of the British climate. With the addition of text from Ravilious's friend, Jim Richards, what was produced was one of the most famous and iconic illustrated books of the twentieth century. He was born in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, the only son of Fred Wadsworth, a worsted-spinning industrialist who established both Broomfield Mill and the firm E. Ella Ravilious is Curator: Architecture and Design at the Victoria and Albert Museum, having worked there in various roles since 2005.

The Belle Adventure itself, fishing for cod, crossed the Atlantic bound for the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, and several of Wallis’s later pictures record this voyage (e.Glued into stiff paper covers with composite pattern paper wrappers in red, titled in blue on the front. But whilst firmly within this tradition, these artists were also modernisers, especially in the adoption of new subject matter. Spowers trained at the Melbourne National Gallery Art School (1911-17) and gained a reputation for black and white children’s story illustrations. In this capacity he first encountered the work of Samuel Palmer and of Blake, and Blake, particularly, was to have a life-long influence on his work.
