Description

I would recommend this graphic novel for its: thoughtfulness, novel structure, heavy realism toward both romantic relationships and living abroad, and of course for it's well-executed illustrations. His curiosity, childlike loudness, going with-the-flow, and whimsical nature were likable, however, his evading doing the art made me like him less.

I have a PhD with a dissertation on comics (Lisbon/Leuven) and I work professionally as a teacher, translator and curator. On the other hand, an almost random meeting with another Italian living in Berlin, Ruben, will throw Teresa into a maelstrom of passion, crisis and a non-bourgeois lifestyle that clashes with her more professional, normative and linear aspirations. The ending kind of threw me though, I sort of expected something different I guess, or maybe a bit more tension. They apparently will continue to publish a few titles each month, but these will only be available through other publishers, and mostly not in English editions.

And on her fist day in the city, she meets Ruben, an artist her age, also Italian, who has been in Berlin for two years, living off the checks his father sends every month and not accomplishing very much. I will also say that the random German and Spanish being thrown in, with no translation on the bottom of the page, was very aggravating. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins.

The second, set at the turn of the 21st century, concerns twenty-year-old Teresa Guerrero, an Italian university student come to Berlin on a grant to work as scientific assistant at the state university’s installation of a Tutankhamen exhibit.Asides from the plot synopsis of the novel, the story itself doesn't mention that it's set in the year 2001 at all. In 2001, Teresa is fresh off the plane in Berlin, ready to start what is, for her, the opportunity of a lifetime—an assistantship working on an exhibition of the treasures in that tomb. The characters only react for a page or two AND THEN THE BOOK JUST ENDS with some speech about "The past and present are more connected than we realize". First, thanks to NetGalley for the chance to review this copy of Hypericon's English-translated edition. This access data is evaluated exclusively for the purpose of ensuring the trouble-free operation of the site and improving our offer. I did find the flips between Teresa's present and the other archeologist team in the 1920s to be interesting, but it took me reading the synopsis to realize the perspective switch was supposed to be what Teresa reading in her book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Fantagraphics Books for the temporary ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review. But I don't really understand Teresa and Ruben, both of whom do get something akin to personality grafts near the end of the book, and whose relationship seems largely based on (quite explicit) sex.
