It's no easy task, especially while grappling with everything from crushes to trig to JV track but they have each other's backs. The captivating illustrations are all in various shades of red, getting lighter and darker with the girls' varying tone throughout the story. For a long time that was pretty much as far as a book for children would go when it came to civil disobedience. We follow the girls as they navigate the complications of algebra, the mysterious workings of the tampon, the blushes of first love and the challenges of trying to change societal attitudes towards menstruation. A beautiful graphic novel that is a must read for teenagers, teachers, parents; and women of all ages.

The characters are so terrific you not only really respond to the story itself and the subject matter, like Sasha, you want to know 'What's next? She received her first undergraduate degree in engineering from UCLA and her second in animation from California College of the Arts. The girls’ group is inclusive, encompassing different heights, skin colors, races, and body types; Brit, who openly discusses her struggles with endometriosis, has brown skin and a full figure, Sasha is Asian and petite, tall and lanky Christine, White, is coming to understand her same-sex attraction, and Abby is White with red hair and a curvy figure. Additionally, getting periods can trigger dysphoria for some trans people, adding additional stress and emotions onto the pile of period feelings. I didn’t want to miss the start of Gilligan’s Island so I said I didn’t care if it was wrapped or not.I’m not 100% sure if this is more of a teen graphic novel or not, but I think that it is appropriate for tweens and older children, as well as teens). I cannot imagine how painful the sanitary belt with metal clips was for my mom, and it made me grateful for technological advances. But by depicting menstruation in the context of adolescent social minefields, Williams and Schneemann rescue the topic from dull health manuals.

Sick of an administration that puts football before female health, the girls confront a world that shrugs - or worse, squirms - at the thought of a menstruation revolution. The story shows how important it is to talk about periods and to have proper support for those who menstruate, including making sanitary products readily available.
