When this seemingly perfect world turns dangerous, Coraline must use her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to save her family. While Coraline may bear a PG rating, this fantasy/horror is certainly not a film for young children. French and Saunders clearly relish their roles and this surely has to be the best thing that Teri Hatcher has ever done. I can see why some sensative children would be freaked by it a little but generally this is an excellent film, the only reason i didnt give it a full 5 stars is that its not for all youngsters.

As her parents work feverishly on a new gardening catalog, the bored and belligerent Coraline is admonished to explore her new world's possibilities. To enable personalised advertising (like interest-based ads), we may share your data with our marketing and advertising partners using cookies and other technologies. Neil Gaiman adapts his own fantasy novel for this stop-motion animated adventure from the director of "The Nightmare Before Christmas". From the visionary director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, and based on Neil Gaiman’s best-selling book, comes this spectacular stop-motion animated adventure! Based on Neil Gaiman's beloved children's novel, director Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas) uses the stop-motion technique to bring Coraline to life with amazing visual and emotional depth.Along the way she meets her fellow tenants, including two aging English showgirls and a mouse-training Russian acrobat, as well as an outcast neighbourhood boy named Wybie.

As you’ll find out when you watch the ‘Making of the movie’ extra on the DVD, the painstaking approach that stop motion filming requires is simply staggering. We had been asking our 10 year old for ages if he wanted to watch this film before he suddenly decided he wanted to, probably due to play ground whispers about how good it is . Coupled with the fact that the storyline is excellent, and is particularly well voiced and written, the film creates an atmosphere that draws you in and makes you want to watch it again and again. From Henry Selick the visionary director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, and based on Neil Gaiman's best-selling book, comes this spectacular stop-motion animated adventure! Having seen the film, I would imagine instead that, in fact, the second rate anaglyph 3D tech that we’re currently limited to in the home would possibly have merely detracted from the rich detail of the images, and the only reason I would tell you to avoid the DVD version would be to pick up the Blu-ray if you can, which surely would be the format to do justice to the stunning visuals of Coraline. The story clearly has echoes of classic children’s’ fiction, with Lewis Caroll, Roald Dahl, and the Brothers Grimm all top of the list.

The result is a frightfully magical adventure that will give the whole family plenty to shriek, cheer, and talk about. In the film, a young girl (voiced by Dakota Fanning) walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. Also I would say that at times the plot lacks a little narrative drive, and were not the images on screen so arresting, my attention could have wandered. All is not cakes and carnivals for Coraline, though, and the black buttons that have replaced the eyes of these otherworldly imitations hint at darker intentions. However, schools considering a textbook for adoption may request an evaluation copy of the textbook and workbook. For older children, however, whether they be of school age or merely the young at heart, this is an eye-popping fantasy that deserves viewing and, now it’s on DVD, here’s your chance.
