Description

We can see our tendencies toward meanness and sin just as tangents or interruptions to our striving for holiness and perfection. And I report it not as an "implausible guess," as he suggests, but based on a confession that Geli made to Gregor Strasser, who later testified about it to the OSS. JO:Is there a “dream work” that you would like to someday tackle—some subject, figure or theme that you would like to someday undertake that you have not yet tried but would like to? Her mother gladly accepted this unorthodox arrangement, in the hopes of making possible a better lifestyle for their family. It was compelling to see how Hansen explored this mysterious figure "lost in history" (little is known about her and the cause of her tragic death is disputed) and their complex (implied incestuous and romantic) relationship.

Ultimately, we end up with Nazi porn, not much subtler than the notorious epitome of Hollywood vulgarity, Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS. I don't care what decade it is, I don't think a somewhat intelligent girl/woman would have put herself in that sort of situation. That's OK, given that this is fiction, but I don't think he did a good job of explaining Hitler's motivation to kill her. They hated communists: yet their socialistic beliefs and antagonism of organized religion showed how much they were similar. But that TV movie was supposed to be a docu-drama -- a dramatization of a true story, not a work of fiction based on a true story. Perhaps because of our experience of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we can see good and evil existing side by side and within the same person. The final tragedy is that of Geli Raubal herself who in the end had had enough of the good spoiled life her Uncle Alof was providing for her because of the terrible costs it was coming at.

The Human and the Monstrous - Boston Review

This gives a more chilling look into the man, as Geli becomes more infatuated by her uncle, and he too is somewhat under her spell, the German people's enchantment with him grows. Both, however, are examples of the prevailing tone in Hitler’s Niece, a novel he claims he wrote for purposes of "education. Definitely nothing ground breaking her unless you want to rad about Hitler’s sexual activities which I did not. Informed speculation suggests that Hitler’s power was already great enough to hush up the crime and have Geli declared a suicide. Though much is not known, there is apparently enough historical information available to piece together a reasonably plausible novel.Hansen traces Hitler’s abnormal psychology from the perspective of Angela Maria (“Geli”) Raubal (1908-1931), his half niece. Oh Geli – meine kleine gehaltenmitgemütlichemkirchenkunsterschwartzeweldekirschtorte, is that a hard or a soft G? Hansen is the author of nine novels, including his most recent A Wild Surge of Guilty Passion(2011), one collection of short stories, Nebraska(1989), and a collection of essays, A Stay Against Confusion: Essays on Faith and Fiction(2001). For a period of time, she lived in his Munich apartment while she studied medicine and took music lessons.

Geli Raubal Historical Fiction - Axis History Forum

This book is well written plus a lot of things: romance, drama, history, pop-psychology, lifestyles of the rich and famous, mystery. I have a Roget’s Thesaurus and foreign language dictionaries (French, German, and Spanish) on the bookcase to the right of my iMac, and a Bible, theological dictionary, and other reference books to the left. Psychology is the bane of the contemporary novel, because it cares more about motives than actions or results. The preponderance of Ron Hansen novels are built around a historical framework— Hitler’s Niece, Exiles, the Westerns, your newest, A Wild Surge of Guilty Passion—and even Mariette in Ecstasyis given a concrete historical context—turn of the century, northern New York, etc. And I was tremendously helped by my friendship with Paul Mariani, author of the first commentary on the poems, who was working on a biography of Hopkins at the same time I was writing Exiles. The first part of this sentence simply isn’t true: psychologists, after all, try toaffectactions and result. Caught in the vortex of her uncle’s overpowering addiction to her, Geli cannot escape the misery that dominates her life. Above eye level as I face the computer screen is a glass-enclosed book case that contains a shelf of commentaries on the New Testament. Well, as I said before, if anyone else out there reads these books, (or watches the movie mentioned above), and cares to comment, please do so!

Hitler, in Love With His Niece - The New York Springtime for Hitler, in Love With His Niece - The New York

Hilter's niece, Geli, was portrayed as a complete idiot and although she supposedly disagreed with Hitler's ideals, she "went along for the ride" and didn't realize her uncle was a creep until it was too late. When the spy stopped following him, the priest felt a surprising loneliness, knowing that they had shared a language and culture and an interrelated past. The plot of the novel hinges on their sexual tension and on Geli’s psychological trauma as she becomes, increasingly against her will, his sexual partner in a sordid, sadomasochistic relationship that sickens her and intoxicates him. I was a college textbook salesman traveling most of Illinois when I was writing Desperadoes[Hansen’s 1979 novel—his first—which tells the story of the notorious Dalton Gang and offers a literary take on the myths popularized by western novels and movies] and I got used to making any motel room my office. The actress did a good job with the script she was given, but she didn't look like Geli any more than Robert Carlyle looked like Hitler.
