The take-home message from this story is that prejudice and bias have no place in the scheme of things and you needs to be proud of your heritage, respect others and stand up for what you believe in. The project takes on even more significance when the class learn it will be put forward for a national Remembrance Day competition with the winning prize being a TV appearance. I bought this middle grade novel at the start of the year and finally got around to it seven months later. It will be used by many high schools as part of their transition programme between primary and high school and gives pupils a shared experience, no matter which high school they go to in September. It’s really witty and I and it’s also fun to read about how they are breaking to the flight machine and use it to get attention I really enjoy reading about their plans and I love how it’s all about remembrance out of all the books I’ve read so far, it was probably my favourite.

When the class embark on a project following on from the trip, they decide to focus on the forgotten heroes of the war - which includes soldiers from Asia and Africa. In a world where nationalism is rising and history is being exploited by certain groups to often build a white-centric vision of the past ,this book is so important and the story is shared so that younger generations finally peel away the blinkered view / perspective of historical events . He, Sangeeta, and a few allies come up with a cunning plan to make sure the heroes aren’t forgotten, but can they overcome red tape, family tensions, and other people determined to see them fail? I do like middle grade contemporary novels that have lower stakes but you can see why this is important for the characters themselves. Raúf is the founder of Making Herstory, an organisation mobilising men, women and children from all walks of life to tackle the abuse and trafficking of women and girls in the UK and beyond.

On a school visit Leo sees a memorial carved with his name and then begins his journey to discover who this person was and ultimately the role they played in World War II as Malayan fighter pilot over Europe. I also became excited about the idea of finding some resources to back up this novel ready for ANZAC Day and a line of inquiry children are on at school into their ancestries.

I really enjoyed reading The Lion Above the Door and found myself reluctant to put it down when I had to do other things. Pupils in Special Schools will also receive a copy of the book and an additional title from the See Myself in Books list – My Skin, Your Skin by Laura Henry-Allain.

I love it wasn't a stereotype of an oppress Asian family that books and movies always depicts of us. Natasha Farrant’s The Girl Who Talked to Trees, in which ‘various species give up their secrets’ to a young girl. But on that same trip, he sees a commemoration stone of an RAF hero who had the exact same name as him –Leo Kai Lim.
