Description

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended that pregnant women and new mothers be informed on the benefits and superiority of breastfeeding – in particular the fact that it provides the best nutrition and protection from illness for babies. Mothers should be given guidance on the preparation for, and maintenance of, lactation, with special emphasis on the importance of a well-balanced diet both during pregnancy and after delivery. Unnecessary introduction of partial bottle-feeding or other foods and drinks should be discouraged since it will have a negative effect on breastfeeding. Similarly, mothers should be warned of the difficulty of reversing a decision not to breastfeed. Before advising a mother to use an infant formula, she should be advised of the social and financial implications of her decision: for example, if a baby is exclusively bottle-fed, more than one can (400 g) per week will be needed, so the family circumstances and costs should be kept in mind. Mothers should be reminded that breast milk is not only the best, but also the most economical food for babies. If a decision to use an infant formula is taken, it is important to give instructions on correct preparation methods, emphasising that unboiled water, unsterilised bottles or incorrect dilution can all lead to illness. Shake bottle well and remove cap and aluminium foil. Unwrap SMA® NUK orthodontic pre-sterilised teat and holding the teat ring, screw directly onto the bottle. Try different teats – there are lots of different types and designs, and it may take some trial and error to find the one your baby prefers Alexander DD et al. Cool the milk and use within one hour, testing it on your wrist before feeding your baby Goehring KC et al. Orthodontic teats are shaped to encourage correct oral development, while nipple-shaped teats are useful for breastfed babies who are combination feeding Material If warmed, test temperature by shaking a few drops of milk onto the inside of your wrist - milk should be lukewarm. SMA® PRO First Infant Milk, is an alternative to breast milk, when baby is not breastfed. Breastfeeding provides the best start for your baby, but if you decide to combination feed or bottle-feed then SMA® PRO First Infant Milk is a nutritionally complete breast milk substitute, enriched with Omega 3 (DHA)*. *Contains DHA (as required by the legislation for all infant formula)Special Safety Feature – Reject bottle if the foil under cap is missing or damaged prior to opening. This precise asymmetric shape has, to this day, been taken as a model for all NUK Teats and Soothers and has resulted in NUK being a key supplier to children’s hospitals throughout Europe. Before you start bottle feeding your newborn there are a few basic items you need to get going. Babies tend to have around 6 feeds a day, so it’s worth having enough equipment for these feeds to allow time for sterilising. You don’t want to keep a hungry baby waiting!

Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and shake well. Cool the bottle under cold running water or in a bowl or jug of cold water until milk is lukewarm. Test the temperature by shaking a few drops onto the inside of your wrist
