Description

Built in the late 18th century next to the distillery, the Great House is surrounded by a fabulous tropical garden and visitor’s center. While it is a rough ride through the mountains to get there, the landscape and history are absolutely beautiful. They refuse to cut corners here and make a serious case for rum being the most complex spirit in the world with every release. Adjoining the main building are the ageing rooms and the large “pool” where they produce the pure sugar cane vinegar which, added at the fermentation stage, gives Hampden rum its unique and unmistakable aromatic bouquet.

Each mark corresponds to a newly made spirit with specific, idiosyncratic characteristics of style, aromatic intensity, flavour profile, body and structure, obtained by respecting a certain formula in terms of raw materials used, fermentation time, methods, and distillation. This is in great part due to an extremely high level of esters achieved by a very long, complex process. Learn about the 260 year old rum making process still in use today and taste our Pure Single Jamaican Rum. Weighing in at a generous 60% ABV, the bold, powerful rum retains plenty of tropical character, with layers of rich oak char, exotic fruit, and woody spice.

A superb choice for mixed drinks, notes here include grilled plantains, tropical flowers, buttered popcorn, shaved coconut and papaya. A high ester Hampden Estate Jamaican rum, HLCF stands for Hampden Light Continental Flavoured, one of many distillate styles made at the Hampden Estate distillery, where rum has been made since 1753. Enjoyed either immediately – like gin – or after many decades of barrel ageing – like Cognac or whisky. Take a guided walk through the grounds and visit the Distillery to see how our rum continues to be made very much like it was done 260 years ago.

Hampden estate, that makes Hampden Estate Rum Fire, is perhaps the most traditional rum producer in the world. At Hampden, fermentation is like a dream for anyone who can grasp the magic and mystery of this process that can transform flour into bread, grapes into wine and fermented sugarcane into rum. With these rums, Hampden Estate have created their very first aged distillery releases in 265 years, which both celebrate the uniqueness of Jamaican rum production and present Hampden to the world stage. In 2009, Hampden Estate started to age its Pure Single Rums, opening a new era in the world of spirits. On the palate: Persistent and pleasant notes of ginger, vanilla, dark chocolate and coffee bean, resin and praline.

This has the profile and complexity of an unaged Overproof, but with a bit of softening from the barrel.Molasses based, fermented for an extended amount of time in open vats, pot still distilled and aged for 8 years in ex-Bourbon casks in the tropical climate of Jamaica.

It has maintained the same production methods and techniques for the last two centuries, such as the use of its own spring water, prolonged fermentation time with wild yeasts, tropical ageing, no added colorants and sugar, and distillation exclusively in pot stills. The world of spirits is infinite, fascinating, entertaining, distracting and a giver of great pleasure. The rich diversity of Hampden Estate’s rums comes, amongst many different factors, from the large array of marks produced by the distillery. He was extremely knowledgeable, sharing interesting facts about the history of the estate and rum making processes. Best enjoyed sipped neat, but makes a delicious full flavoured Rum Old Fashioned, or can be used to bring full flavour and life to a rum punch / tiki style drink such as a Mai Tai. Upon arriving to the Hampden Estate we were greeted by resident peacocks and Steve who spent a long time showing us around the Estate. The process lasts between 8 and 15 days and takes place in the wooden vats whose slats speak of the passing of time.
