The super‑distorted bass guitar, which is so fuzzy it almost sounds like a synth, was achieved by playing the bass straight into a Korg fuzzbox and then applying EQ. The other obvious instrumental contribution is the Hammond organ, played through a Leslie speaker with no treble rotor and mixed to sweep around the stereo spectrum. Salaverri, Fernando (September 2005). Sólo éxitos: año a año, 1959–2002 (1sted.). Spain: Fundación Autor-SGAE. ISBN 8480486392. Even though the drums were recorded using analogue tape compression, the rest of the song's production, including the "fat fuzzy bass line" and the coda, was completed using Pro Tools 24. Even with their diminutive discography, each album from The Cardigans stands as inventive and immersive affairs. But, Gran Turismo was the moment when the group pivoted from the safety of expectation and set off toward the horizons of the musical unknown—its boldness has lost none of its power”.Simpson, Dave (4 December 2018). "The Cardigans review – at their best when playing the lovefool". The Guardian . Retrieved 5 December 2018. The first three Cardigans albums were recorded at Tore Johansson's Tambourine Studios in Malmö, Sweden (see the 'Malmö Swede Preachers' box). Recently, however, Johansson has developed a second studio, the eccentrically named Country Hell, in a large house in Skurup, about half an hour outside Malmö, and it was here that 'My Favourite Game' and the rest of Gran Turismo were recorded. Now the serious Pro Tools work began, as Tore recounts. "After recording the drums, we immediately started recording the guitars dry to Pro Tools so that we could choose our amps later. This was where Amp Farm [ Line 6's Pro Tools guitar amp emulation plug‑in] came in useful. We didn't use Amp Farm on the hook guitar line, though — it's heavily compressed and extremely EQ'd, with a band‑pass filter a little below 1kHz. We also looped it to get that repetitive feeling. The sound just comes from the analogue compressors and EQs distorting, not Amp Farm." Both the drum and guitar parts were recorded in a "'70s-style dry room" [3] while the vocals were recorded in the attic of the studio. The music for Gran Turismo was composed by Cardigans founder member and guitarist Peter Svensson, while the lyrics were written by singer Nina Persson and bassist Magnus Sveningsson (the band's other co‑founder). Before going into the studio Svensson had written seven songs in a month, but he had no lyrics. He apparently expected to be in Country Hell for about a month. Unsurprisingly, the project ended up taking longer; it began on May 15 and was completed on July 15. New Directions

After their success with Life, The Cardigans signed with Mercury Records, under which they released First Band on the Moon worldwide in 1996. " Lovefool" was a hit worldwide, particularly in the US and Japan, where the album reached platinum status in three weeks. The album also achieved gold sales status in the US. "Lovefool" was shown on MTV in the late 1990s as a music video with clips from the 1996 hit film Romeo + Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. It was also featured in the film Cruel Intentions (1999). Fox, Matt (3 January 2013). The Video Games Guide: 1,000+ Arcade, Console and Computer Games, 1962-2012, 2d ed. McFarland & Company. p.129. In June 2018, the band announced their only live shows of the year: a four-date UK tour in December to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gran Turismo in which they would perform the album in full again. [14] In an interview to promote the tour, Persson stated, "There won’t be any more Cardigans records, I’m pretty sure. But we’ll keep doing little tours and shows as long as it’s fun, as long as we can do it well and feel that it’s something that’s current to us." [15] IFPI Platinum Europe Awards – 1999". She remains a fabulous frontperson and if she’s disappointed by the closed balcony and the hall’s empty spaces, it doesn’t show. “Look at you, Manchester!” she yells. With guitarist Oskar Humlebo ably replacing Peter Svensson (who declined the reunion) and the sound ever improving, the country-tinged Junk of the Hearts doesn’t sound out of place in today’s world of Taylor Swift et al.
