Cooking Mama’s ingredients include a variety of gameplay modes, including over 200 mini-games and a practice mode where you decide what to cook, how long to cook it for and how to present it. But remember, Mama is always by your side to offer friendly advice and a kind word if you singe the sausages or bungle the bean dip. Playing in the main game enables players to earn bronze, silver and gold awards for their efforts based on the quality of their cooking and recipes can even be shared with up to four other people via DS Wi-Fi link up. With 150 fast and fun mini-games that challenge your expertise in the kitchen, Cooking Mama 2 lets you try your hand at creating the perfect dish before setting it in front of a judge. Make too many mistakes and your finished creation will look – and probably taste – like a dog’s dinner. Get it right, however, and you can expect an overjoyed dinner guest and some high praise from Mama herself! You can even take notes of what you did to create your best recipes in your personal diary, where you can also keep pictures of how a finished creation should look if you get it right. While the controls are generally spot-on, Mama doesn’t demand the same degree of precision from her players; the grading system in the main Let’s Cook mode is extremely generous, forgiving all but the most egregious errors and handing out positive reinforcement at every turn. Tilting a strainer too far and spilling all our carefully cooked rice into the sink, for instance, merited an approving thumbs up and a ‘Not too bad!’ from Mama. It keeps things friendly and accessible for everyone, including younger players, and makes each recipe an experience to enjoy rather than a challenge to overcome.
