It's a modern and engaging story that I feel encourages dialogue, communication, and open-mindedness in those who read it. It’s a fantastic independent book seller that will actually be responsive and select appropriate books for you.

Writing in The Guardian, John Crace said of it "For essential reading on both the meaning of dogs and the meaning of life, I can recommend Anthony McGowan’s wonderful book How to Teach Philosophy to Your Dog. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1986 at the age of 21 and told his chance of survival was a percentage "in the low teens". This will be her first visit since she abandoned them with their alcoholic father many years before.Love of siblings, of parents, of surrogate parents, of animal companions, and of course the first crush. I have not read the book yet but for anyone who is looking to encourage a reluctant reader you must try this book. McGowan was the second of five children born into a working-class Roman Catholic family in Manchester. This time, it’s not his dad or Kenny who need help - his dad’s sorting his life out, and Kenny’s busy making plans with his new best mate.

In many ways this makes sense – much academic ink has been spilt on the issues associated with conjuring up an imagined reader , especially in relation to children’s literature. In this powerful new novel, Tom Palmer masterfully conveys the devastating impact of war both for those who fight on the frontlines and those who are left at home to worry and grieve" - Publisher Ailsa Bathgate. The final piece of this is thinking about Lark in the context of its publisher, and the wider significance of choosing this particular kind of publication for the Carnegie Medal.

Published by Barrington Stoke the book is dyslexia friendly so the chapters (and the book itself) are short. He gives them a map and instructions on the buses they must take to get there, assuring the paths are well marked and it will be a good day trip. Lark and the Truth of Things is a collected edition of the stunning and moving stories from the Truth of Things series by award-winning author Anthony McGowan. So I wouldn’t say this ending is ablist – but in the context of that long tradition of disabled characters who don’t make it to the end of the book, it is a bit uncomfortable.

When the book starts with a slightly simple older brother and a little dog, the only question is which one of them is the horrible thing going to happen to. An uncompromising and heartbreaking end to the story of Nicky and Kenny, the beloved brothers of the Carnegie shortlisted Rook, beautifully told in McGowan's gritty realism. I also confess that I booed my eyes out at the last few pages, and this was rather inconvenient, as just at that moment the postman turned up, and as I handed him his Christmas box of Milk Tray, I had to explain why tears were running down my face!

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. He wrote an article for Wisden Cricket Monthly in 2019 about how listening to the Ashes cricket series on the radio helped get him through the ordeal.

It’s appropriate that whereas the first three books open with a chapter from the point of view of the animal, and focus the plot around this animal, Lark breaks from this.

The story is simple so I won't spoil it--they go out for a walk on the snowy moors and weather and events overtake them and their wee dog.
