Hilburn, Robert; Hunt, Dennis; Cromelin, Richard; Feather, Leonard; Atkinson, Terry; Johnson, Connie; Pond, Steve; Damsker, Matt; Grein, Paul; Waller, Don; Willman, Chris; Gurza, Agustin; Matsumoto, Jon; Baker, Chris; Shapiro, Marc; Reeves, Jim (December 16, 1984). And there were three mixes of We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) issued originally, so why in this collector’s set just include the bog standard version and deny fans the rarer Extended Version or instrumental? For example, the American label liked Help so much they left it off their version of Private Dancer altogether , whereas in the UK not only was it on the album (track 9 of a 10 track album) it was the second single – which then proceeded to flop, peaking at number 40.

The instruments were recorded, but Mark Knopfler considered the lyrics unsuitable for a male singer, so the track was dropped from the project. It became a worldwide commercial success, earning multi-platinum certifications, and remains her best-selling album in North America to date. No one has commissioned a documentary (like the one on the DVD that formed part of the excellent Roy Orbison Mystery Girl deluxe). The barcode panel in the top right corner is a more modern design superimposed on the older artwork. The only purple faced USA from Japan pressing I've heard did not fare well against the Japanese CP35-3148 Black Triangle pressing for me.

The song was written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, but never fully recorded or released by his band.

Private Dancer - Wikipedia

As is often the way with these iconic albums, the singles just kept coming, with seven in total pulled from the record across all territories. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice felt that she embraced the "middlebrow angst of contemporary professional songwriting".Ultimately the booklet and the content itself of this deluxe edition lack any historical narrative or insight. In 1983, despite opposition from within Capitol, he signed her and managed her first album for the label, Private Dancer. It almost became academic whether they were big hits (many weren’t), they simply kept the promotional merry-go-round turning. Yes, the seven-inch mix of the title track is available elsewhere, but this is a 30th anniversary edition and it surely the version-everyone-heard-on-the-radio should be here – but it isn’t.

One of the highlights, the Martyn Ware and Greg Walsh produced Let’s Stay Together, failed to reach the top 20 in the US but we loved it in the UK and it kickstarted the Private Dancer campaign. The cover of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and Tina’s “Better Be Good To Me” start side 2 where side 1 left off. At first I was going to try to just put my voice on Mark's tapes, but there was a record company problem, so we got Mark's musicians, Dire Straits, and went into the studio.

In 1997, EMI, the parent label of Capitol Records, released a digitally remastered Centenary Edition of the Private Dancer album on CD. Debby Miller, in a July 1984 Rolling Stone review, felt that the album was a powerful comeback, with Turner's voice "rasping but strong", and a range of songs that were all good in a "modern rock setting" that was "neither detached nor very fussy". The accompanying music video for "Private Dancer", featuring dance choreography by Arlene Phillips, was directed by Brian Grant and filmed at London's Rivoli Ballroom. This album contains the hits "WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT", "YOU BETTER BE GOOD TO ME ", and "PRIVATE DANCER" . It's mindblowing that a woman in her mid-40s could go from not being able to secure an American record deal to becoming a major player on MTV and top 40 radio within a year.

Arguably, with just eight tracks more then the 1997 expanded set, it doesn’t offer enough to justify another deluxe edition. The only thing everyone agreed on was that What’s Love Got To Do With It was a great pop song and it was a massive hit all over the world, including America where it was Tina Turner’s only number one single. Originally released in June 1984, Private Dancer features hits from the eight time Grammy® winning artist including "What's Love Got to Do With It," "Better Be Good To Me," "Private Dancer," and "Let's Stay Together. Not gonna be a demo quality LP but there are some great songs on here that sound great at top volume!Roger [Turner's manager] knows Knopfler's manager Ed Bicknell, and Bicknell said, 'I think Mark has a song that could fit Tina, that he never used because he thought it was a song for a girl. The album remains the only Tina Turner studio album to have been re-issued in digitally remastered form. The success of the singles does a great job of illustrating the difference in pop/rock sensibilities on either side of the Atlantic from both public and record companies alike.
