Della Riccia,D. N., Bizzini, F., Perilli, M. G., Polimeni, A., Trinchieri, V., Amicosante,G., & Cifone, M. G. (2007). Anti‐inflammatory effects of Lactobacillusbrevis (CD2) on periodontal disease [Abstract]. Oral Diseases, 13(4), 376-385 Did you know that probiotic toothpaste could be good for not only your oral or dental health but also your gut and general health? First, every part of your body is connected somehow. Therefore, a positive impact on one of your body parts could have a corresponding impact on your general health. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved oral probiotics for any medical use. But several studies suggest that probiotics can benefit your oral health. Here’s what the research says about five possible benefits of oral probiotics: 1. Prevent plaque

Be sure to stir until completely blended. It will be a bit runny at first, but it will set up as it cools. I recommend making smaller batches more frequently to ensure freshness. Aim: To compare the effectiveness of nonchemical mouthwashes (probiotic) with chemical mouthwashes (fluoride) on plaque accumulation in orphan children after seven, 14, and 30 days of use. Probiotic toothpaste, on the other hand, has been designed to eliminate only what should be, and support the good. Doesn’t this sound better? Doing so will boost your oral health and if your mouth feels fresh and healthy, then chances are high that you’ll feel good and lively too. But aren’t we forgetting something? Aren’t we forgetting that the point is not to get rid of all bacteria present, but only what is harmful? Perhaps that’s the confusing part. Let’s talk about it then! How much do you know about probiotics? Did you know that besides boosting a great deal of your gut and general health, they can also be quite good for your oral health? Perhaps you already knew this, but if you didn’t, then this article may help you.A study from 2013 found that a bacterium called Lactobacillus salivarius reduced oral cancer in rats. More studies need to be done to confirm this benefit. 4. Manage symptoms of gingivitis

A blend of coconut oil, bentonite clay powder, probiotics and prebiotics forms the foundation of this homemade probiotic toothpaste recipe. Bentonite clay powder looks off-white or pale gray in the jar but turns a more intense brownish-gray when mixed with coconut oil. This is normal. Your probiotic toothpaste isn’t going to win any beauty contests, but your mouth will love it!A well-formulated mouthwash is needed to rinse away food missed by brushing, helps fight cavity-causing critters, and freshens your breath. Despite their usefulness for oral hygiene, some people have steered clear of them due to the controversy over some commonly used ingredients, so we’ve been particularly careful to choose safe and natural ingredients that have a function other than just an over-powering minty rinse. The advantages of using probiotic strains are that the bacterial strains present in them are not harmful to the oral cavity, there is no issue of antibiotic resistance occurring, and there are no proven toxicities related to their use. In group 4 (probiotic mouth rinse), the mean colony counts were 1.26 CFU/ml at baseline, 3.27 CFU/ml on the 7 th day, 4.92 CFU/ml on the 14 th day, and 8.71 CFU/ml on the 30 th day. There was a sustained decrease in the bacterial count even after the 14 th day until 30 th day of usage of the probiotic mouthwash. Good and harmful bacteria are both present in your mouth. But we just want the good bacteria left, and the bad ones eliminated. The obvious way would be through traditional toothpaste, but as we have already discussed and as we know, traditional toothpaste is designed to eliminate 99% to even 99.9% of bacteria in our mouth. We all have many different types of bacteria in our mouths. Some of them cause plaque. A study from 2016 found that a strain of bacteria known as A12 can help fight a cavity-causing bacterium called Streptococcus mutans. S. mutans turns sugar into lactic acid. This creates an acidic environment in the mouth that leads to cavities and plaque. The researchers grew both types of bacteria together in the lab. The A12 bacteria stopped the S. mutans from growing and from making any plaque. 2. Fight bad breath Another factor that I would put into consideration is the whitening-capability of the toothpaste. Is it able to leave my teeth whiter than they were before? We all want that fresh breath too, so go for something that won’t give you a funny after-feeling, but rather leave your mouth fresh.

The researchers gave 59 people with gingivitis a supplement containing either a probiotic bacterium known as Lactobacillus reuteri or a placebo. The participants returned two weeks later. The researchers found that the gingivitis symptoms had improved the most in the group taking the highest dose of probiotics. The people taking probiotics also had less plaque. 5. Decrease inflammation from gum disease Therefore, chemical control methods appeared as an aid and enhancer technique [ 13]. Oral washes are used as a support for mechanical dental cleaning methods to reduce dental plaque [ 12]. The American Dental Academy introduced fluoride mouthwashes as a therapeutic product for preventing dental decay by fluoride ions, which promote remineralization and inhibit bacterial growth and metabolism [ 14]. However, the illogical use of fluoride has dangerous side effects like dental fluorosis, natural fluorosis, neurotoxicity, and others [ 15]. To avoid this disadvantage, probiotic technology was presented by Elie Metchnikoff in 1908 [ 16]. Probiotic mouthwashes contain living microbes such as lactobacilli or Bifidobacterium, which are considered a part of oral microflora and could reduce the level of Streptococcus mutans in saliva by several mechanisms such as the production of antimicrobial agents (lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and bacteriocins), modulating the inflammatory response, and competing with pathogens for adhesion surfaces [ 17]. Bentonite clay tastes, well, mild and clay-like. It isn’t unpleasant, but adding xylitol makes the paste sweeter, which kids may find more acceptable.

Most of us were raised to believe that tooth decay and cavities were pretty much our fault because we had eaten too much candy and hadn’t brushed our teeth well enough. Plus, they were irreversible. But different parts of our bodies have different needs. This is because each part serves a unique purpose. Well, so do probiotics! There is, therefore, something different to learn about oral probiotics, from what you already know as general information. But why probiotic toothpaste? The traditional toothpaste, if you’d allow me to call it, will always be the unbeatable solution for eliminating bacteria in your mouth. But remember that we need the good bacteria for several other purposes. At this point, there’s not enough evidence that probiotic mouthwashes improve your oral health. Instead, a good daily routine to adopt is brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time, brushing your tongue (which contains a lot bacteria), flossing and drinking a lot of water. In a comparison between primary and permanent molars, after seven days, there was nodifference, which agrees with Ramberg et al.’s study who proved that plaque formed during the seven days of the experiment was similar in the primary and permanent teeth [ 21]. After 14 and 30 days, plaque accumulation was statistically significant, and primary molars had a lower degree than permanent molars, which could be due to the difference in the anatomy of the teeth. It is also advisable that when or after brushing your teeth with probiotic toothpaste, you don’t rinse off all of it from your mouth. You’re perhaps used to rinsing off thoroughly after using the regular toothpaste. This should not only be a relief to your teeth, but an added guarantee. To what, though? Significant improvement in all clinical parameters were noted in both the groups after 1 and 3 months. Intergroup comparison revealed significant difference in gingival index, probing depth and clinical attachment gain. Significant elevation of salivary IgA and pH was noticed in probiotic group in contrast to placebo group.
