Living in the area the book is set was what drew me originally, and am glad it did as I really enjoyed it. There is organised crime to deal with, drugs, guns etc and the Welsh Drug Squaf and the NCA…all while trying to solve these murders…. There were instances of great storytelling, when I actually started to enjoy the book, turning the pages faster to see what will happen next, but then once again it just left it short and I felt like there was just not enough the author was telling me.

There was no forensic evidence, no direct eyewitness evidence to the shooting and in fact no one saw him going to and from the scene. He believed they existed, believed they drank human blood, and believed most importantly that they could achieve immortality. The particular weapon is designed for hunting to bring down game, and that is what my dad became: prey.

A BBC journalist was also at the scene and we approached the officer standing guard at the gate and asked what had happened.

Corrigan’s daughter, Fiona, said: “The injuries caused by a crossbow are not designed just to kill, they are designed to mutilate. The bolt passed completely through Corrigan’s body, causing terrible internal damage including bruising the heart.

I wanted to understand - but understanding was undercut by a sense of the author playing with my emotions. A sports therapist has been found guilty of murdering a retired lecturer by shooting him with a crossbow at his remote island home in what police described as a “barbaric, medieval-style execution”. Fast forward to today and Detective Inspector Alan Williams is investigating a series of murders with uncanny similarities to the Peter Moore attacks. But there are also other murders on the island which seems to point to copycat killings based on a previous serial killer's methods. As the number of victims increases, a major investigation team battles to unravel a deadly puzzle which, appears to have links to a series of historic murders from the 90's. In particular, I really did like the character of Detective Inspector Alan Williams and took to him from the start. It was only later, in the forensic conditions of the mortuary, that officers realised it was Mrs Leyshon's heart.
