Higher Energy Efficiency Thanks to the New Controller

On paper, the biggest downside to the 990 Pro is its continued reliance on the now-aging PCIe Gen 4 specifications. Prior to the launch of the 990 Pro, there was hopeful anticipation that Samsung would make the leap to the newer PCIe Gen 5 standard for its latest flagship SSD, but that wasn’t the case. Still, Samsung managed to squeeze a lot of extra performance out of the Gen 4 technology, and the strategy to stay loyal to a tried and tested standard may not be all entirely bad news despite Gen 5’s promise of delivering twice the speeds. AMD continues to deliver the highest sequential throughput, so it's no surprise to see the lone AMD result at the top of our Intel-based chart. Samsung specs its 990 PRO as capable of up to 7,450 MB/s sequential read throughput, quite obviously when paired with an AMD-based platform, and we find that easily achievable with our AMD hardware. On the Intel side of things, our 1TB test subject is delivering identical read throughput to that of its larger sibling.

In the PCMark 10 Overall Storage benchmark, which measures a drive's speed in everyday tasks such as loading games and launching the Windows operating system and assorted applications, the 990 Pro with heatsink had the high score among our comparison group of PCI Express 4.0 SSDs, besting the SK Hynix Platinum P41 as well as the non-heatsink Samsung SSD 990 Pro (which used the motherboard's heatsink in our testing). Its scores were also slightly higher than those of the non-heatsink 990 Pro in nearly all of the PCMark trace tests, which evaluate some of the individual components that go into the overall score. With the 990 Pro, Samsung has gone from competent and reliable performer with the prior generation 980 Pro to a competitive beast with the 990 Pro that crushes the competition. In sequential workloads, the 990 Pro significantly outpaced the 970 EVO Plus in both reads and writes, but when the queue depth is low, you'll see a slight gap in reads. However, it's unlikely you'll run into many modern applications where SSD performance actually matters but the queue depth is only one or two. When transferring large files, the 990 Pro is almost twice as fast as the 970 EVO Plus. Additionally, Samsung improved overall efficiency when compared to the 980 Pro.
