Description

Not one of the greatest Maigret stories but a great drawing of characters involved and a beautiful insight of a Paris and Europe of old. Simenon shows once more that he can write a detective in yet another way and make you want to read the story right to the end. proof edition given to Penguin employees at a conference in February 2013. It was too early for one of the new covers. The same ( 2006 Red Classics) Linda Asher translation was used for the new edition. (see: archive 17) Previously "Maigret and the Burglar's Wife. A book I have read before and remember the faithful TV adaptation with Michael Gambon in the 90's. It's been many years since I last read a Maigret novel, but the recent Penguin re-issues in new translations piqued my interest in re-visiting him. This is the 38th in the series, so the character is well-established, and Simenon doesn't spend much time in this one filling in details of his personal life. It works perfectly as a standalone, as I believe most, if not all, of them do. Granada Television produced an adaptation of Maigret for ITV in 1992 and 1993 in which Michael Gambon starred as Maigret; there were 12 adaptations in the two series. An earlier version, Maigret (1988) on ITV cast Richard Harris in the lead role.

This is the first issue of a Penguin Maigret and the Ghost and The Hotel Majestic, as single volume editions. They had previously appeared in the 1982 "Collection" Volume Maigret and the Ghost (Along with the non-Maigret, Three Beds in Manhattan.Murielle Wenger, Stephen Trussel Maigret's World: A Reader's Companion to Simenon's Famous Detective, McFarland 2017, p.9 Maigret and the Strangled Stripper, Maigret in Montmartre, Inspector Maigret and the Strangled Stripper ('51) PLOT The Maigret stories have also received numerous film, television and radio adaptations. Penguin Books published new translations of 75 books in the series over as many months; [3] the project was begun in November 2013 by translators David Bellos, Anthea Bell, and Ros Schwartz. [5] Character [ edit ] Creation [ edit ] Marcel Guillaume [ fr], a celebrated French police commissioner, pictured giving evidence in 1932. He has been seen as a possible inspiration for Maigret.

Stuart Radmore has located another copy of Maigret Afraid (1965 - C2250), apparently identical in all other respects, but with a cover price of 5/6.Unlike most BBC series produced in the 1960s, all episodes (bar the pilot) have survived intact, and are available as a complete set on DVD and Blu-ray. The choice of Davies to play Maigret was enthusiastically approved by Simenon himself. Remembering the role in a 1964 interview Davies said "When Andrew Osborn, the producer of the show, offered me the part on Good Friday in 1960, I knew very little about Maigret. I knew he was a famous French fictional detective, but that was all." Rather than read the books to get the feel for the character, Davies thought it would be better to meet Maigret's creator and hear from him how he saw the character. The BBC agreed and a meeting was arranged between Davies and Simenon in Lausanne. [4] I understand that this is a new translation, but only having read the novels in French many years ago I have no comparison point. It reads extremely well and seems to fit the period.

[1] Airing in two seasons, each of the episodes was based on a single book. The series covered only 12 of Georges Simenon's 75 novels and 28 short stories about the detective. [3] Cast [ edit ] In France, Albert Préjean portrayed Maigret in three films; [1] Picpus, Cecile Is Dead, and Majestic Hotel Cellars. A decade later, Jean Gabin played the part in three other films; [1] Maigret Sets a Trap, Maigret et l'Affaire Saint-Fiacre, and Maigret voit rouge. Heinz Rühmann played the lead in a 1966 European international co-production Enter Inspector Maigret. Theme music and various incidental music was composed by Ron Grainer [6] for which he won an Ivor Novello award. [6] Apart from the pilot, all 52 episodes remain within the BBC's archives. [7]

David Drake's "A Comparison of Simenon's and Drake's Chronologies of Maigret's Life", a chronological arrangement of 43 novels and stories based on calculations of Maigret's age in the text. Biographers Thomas Narcejac and Fenton Bresler both see Simenon himself in his creation. [7] Description [ edit ] I have only one complaint about this series, and this book in particular: they go by too fast. This was my favorite so far--a woman Maigret arrested years ago for theft who embarrassed him by stripping naked and refusing to go with him (and who is the "tall woman" of the title) comes to him to ask him find her boyfriend, a thief who discovered a dead woman while robbing an affluent dentist. But when Maigret investigates there is no body and the dentist denies having been robbed. Other prominent characters include police surgeon Dr. Paul and the Examining Magistrate, Judge Coméliau, who alternates between being a help and a hindrance to Maigret. Lawson, Mark (25 March 2016). Megure Keishi, [21] a 25-episode TV series aired from 14 April to 29 May 1978 on Asahi TV. Megure's wife was played by Sato Tomomi, who earned the praises of Simenon himself: "The best 'Madame Maigret' in my opinion, even including the French ones, was the 'Madame Maigret' on Japanese television. She was exactly right". [22] Simenon a brilliant Belgian writer, born in Liege [which is a proverbial stone throw away from where I live in the South of the Netherlands], is probably best known for his series about Maigret the French policeman. The pace in these books are never much higher than pedestrian, but they are full of characters that are fleshed out and recognizable. The Maigret stories are in general very good drawings of situations that went wrong and needs a policeman to bring the truth to the light.
