Non obvious is subjective, the choice made was to display only tiles that can be placed and possible estate / duchy destinations for the Place tile action, and tiles that can be taken for free from the main board, with a church, market or carpenter. Castles' has become a favorite in this family and is one of the few games that can lure my son away from the computer. There just wasn’t enough to the theme or artwork to make it worth the usual frustrations of learning a new game feel worth it for her. And check out this bit of mathematical symmetry–the two strongest types of tiles (castles and mines) have only 3 open spaces on each board.

What they do is enforce a spatial context on optimisation and it’s your job to work out how to solve it. Tiles you’re holding but not using do you no good, so sometimes what you’re most interested in is a swift turnaround. There are a lot of reasons I’d caution someone to avoid Castles of Burgundy and pick up something more instantly approachable. The Castles of Burgundy is more than its underwhelming artwork (and yes, even the updated 20th anniversary edition has underwhelming artwork). Identical (random) board for all players: all players play with the same board, randomly chosen among available boards. Although it sounds complicated, in reality The Castles of Burgundy is a straightforward combination of strategy and luck that will gain you the points that you need to win. There’s a reason Castles of Burgundy continues to show up in “best games of all time” lists over the last 10 years—it’s such a fun and well-designed experience.

This means taking an extraordinary risk in 3 and 2 player games where, depending on the luck of the draw, it might be actually impossible to fill the space with all of one animal type. Players aim to build regions (colored sections) in their dutchy to gain depreciating completion bonuses. What makes this edition by far the the best of all the many others, is that it includes eight expansions, seven of which were optional extras or promotions and one new to this release. Your dice allow you take tiles from the corresponding numbered depot and place tiles on your estate. It doesn’t get you any additional action efficiency, and you’re almost always going to be fine with what’s offered with the black tiles. In a turn, each player rolls two dice and uses the results, which can be manipulated with the aid of workers, to get tiles from a common board and then eventually placing them onto their kingdom. Players will earn bonuses for filling in a specific region of their board, which is worth more points if done earlier in the game, or for filling all hexes of a specific color on their entire board. It’s gambling with a safety net, letting you lay-off your terrible rolls with the reliable manipulation permitted by a serf class under your unremitting control. Both boards have ship spaces placed fairly evenly and both have a large farm segment, so this should be a fairly decent test of my hypothesis. Some give you points for having certain kinds of tiles already placed, others give you an instant bailout of cash or serfs.

At any point during their turn, a player may purchase a tile from the central depot for 2 silver coins. Other games that we like that are easy for our group are Agricola, Wingpan,7 Wonders, Dominion, Castles of Mad Kind Ludwig, Isle of Cats, Azul, etc. The artwork within the game may be simplistic but it’s certainly vibrant – every time I photograph my plays it just pops. The Special Edition of the Castles of Burgundy is beautifully made, with high end, quality feeling components that elevate gameplay to the next level. Even if, for instance, you filled a 1 size region in round 3, and a 2 size region in round 4, you would receive 14 points on net-4 dice, which is 3.Don't forget that like in any BGA game, you can disable tooltips (in the user preferences menus) if they annoy you. Stefan Feld's highly decorated board game "The Castles Of Burgundy" by Ravensburger is getting its digital version on Steam! However, after a few plays I created a crib-sheet for each player and this, together with our growing familiarity with the game, made things run much more smoothly.
