Description

The woodland has since had a couple of name changes; Upper Hamble Country Park and now Manor Farm Country Park and is now a well used recreation facility. Long-toed Stint was added in 2021 following the acceptance of a record from 2011 and Black Duck was added in 2022. The New Forest, with its pasture, woodland and heaths, is particularly noted for breeding raptors, such as, Hobby, and Honey Buzzard, and passerines, such as, Wood Warbler, Dartford Warbler, Redstart and Stonechat.

The more people know about the work we do and the importance of looking after birds of prey, then the greater chance we have of protecting them. In this new and lavishly illustrated book, the wildlife and wild places quite rightly take centre stage. This forest has trees from around the world, making marvellous nesting points for a wide variety of birds. This is a beautiful trail in the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, exploring the Chidham Peninsula. The simplicity of this statement belies the complexity of the tasks it requires and the long-term commitment and investment. Species include the colourful firecrest, the shy hawfinch, the UK’s only endemic bird the crossbill, and treecreepers. All significant birdwatching areas in the region are analysed under the headings 'Habitat', 'Timing', 'Access' and 'Calendar', providing all the information necessary to make the most of each and every trip, whatever the time of year.

The county has been fortunate to retain habitats which are increasingly rare in southern Britain - lowland heaths, chalk grasslands, ancient woodlands and unspoilt estuaries. Challenges can include bogs, fords, unmarked paths, remoteness (with patchy phone service) and some congested roads. It is a popular route for horseback riding, running and mountain biking, though cyclists should keep an eye out for horses and ramblers. I’ve always been in awe of bird artists, people like Ian Lewington, Killian Mullarney, Szabolcs Kokay, Juan Varela and Barry Van Dusey and have longed to improve my own drawing ability. The present volume provides further recognition of the 'systems approach' to science and management, which attempts to integrate multidisciplinary science through interaction with various decision-making authorities. With some of the most iconic landscapes in southern England, including the white chalk cliffs of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, and such well-loved landmarks as Ditchling Beacon and atmospheric ancient monuments like the Cissbury Ring, walking in the park proves a delightful experience mile after mile. It is internationally important for the bird population that is supports, such as bearded tit, sedge and reed warblers.

Suspect records include Gyr Falcon Falco rusticolus, White’s Thrush Zoothera aurea and Pine Grosbeak Pinicola enucleator, all claimed as seen or collected in Hampshire but, following a review by Hampshire Ornithological Society, not admitted to the county list. Necessary practical details are given, accompanied by maps on access and how to get to the site as well as pointers to its suitability for photography, educational facilities, organized group visits and visits by disabled enthusiasts and those with young families. The Langstone Hotel is located just 8 miles from Portsmouth, outside of Havant on the northern shore of Hayling Island. It has rich and varied habitats together with an excellent historical record of the species to be found there. This new 12-panel fold-out chart features some of the special animals and plants for which this area is justly famous. The Atlas features: 135 summer and 168 winter maps showing species' distribution and relative population density; 124 maps showing the changes in summer distribution since the last atlas in 1986-91; tables and charts showing trends; explanations of how birds in Hampshire are faring; an assessment of Hampshire's bird habitats and how they are changing; and the most comprehensive set of bird photographs taken in Hampshire.

Be aware that part of the trail can only be accessed at low tide, with no alternative route, so you can only do a circuit when it isn't high tide.

This patchwork of habitats helps our wildlife to move about freely, forming a vast living landscape that links urban green spaces with the wider countryside. For best view, walk 50 yds past Itchen bridge, from where you park, to gate on right hand side of road, and look across River. There is an Education Centre that caters for school, youth, scouting and adult special interest or community groups throughout the year and a comprehensive programme of guided walks and family events.
