I've read the precursor to this book, A Time to Kill, but don't remember much about it - it was a long time ago. What I do know is that this is a brilliantly crafted courtroom drama in it's own right. It's worth reading whether you caught ATtK or not. Having recently read another excellent courtroom yarn, in Michael Connelly's latest offering The Gods of Guilt, I had little hope this would compare favourably. I was wrong, it's as good if not better.

Seth has been saving money for years, and now he’s a millionaire. He leaves his fortune to Letitia Lang, who took care of him in the last few years of his life. However, Seth wrote the will just before he died; so there is going to be a debate about whether or not it’s legal. In a letter mailed just before he died, Seth asks attorney Jake Brigance to fight to the death to preserve this new will..... The Camino series’ plot revolves around a fictional island resort in Florida. The caper stories filled with rare valuables and hot pursuits stray away from Grisham’s well-known legal thrillers and offer a fresh perspective. In Celtic mythology, the sycamore was associated with the world tree, a sacred tree that connects heaven, earth, and the underworld. The Celts believed that the sycamore was a home to fairies and other spirits, and they often planted sycamore trees near their homes for protection. Grisham brings his setting to life - the town, culture, attitudes and more are all detailed and benefit greatly from the author's own past. The legal machinations employed are just as detailed (and interesting) Grisham both grew up in the South and practiced law in Mississippi.

The characters are well-written, compelling, and realistic - behaving true to their depicted personalities. Part of my problem is that while it's good, it is extremely slow moving and it did make it tough. I am a fan of Grisham but he has countless others I prefer. Are you an admirer of Grisham’s novels but want a break from all the excitement crime fiction brings? Look no further. Influenced by his own life experiences, Grisham wrote two fascinating literary works which explore the freedoms and limitations life has to offer. The prosecution then calls two witnesses. One hints that Lettie changed the will to get Seth to have sex with her; the other claims she had a plan to take advantage of old people. It looks like Jake isn’t going to win this case. I did shed a tear as I listened to the riveting scene in which the father of two sons killed by a drunken driver reached out to the family of the driver to say he and his wife are Christians who forgive the man because that's what Christ calls them to do. In the book, this left the lawyer protagonist speechless. It left me thinking about what it truly means to be a Christian. I heard that a few days before Easter and it choked me up. The story starts to drag when it becomes apparent that there is nothing to be done besides rehash the same subjects over and over again. There is some interest in the lives of the characters affected, the housekeeper and her family, the humiliated children of the deceased and his past. But too often the legal sections get mired in the same old greedy lawyers attempting to manipulate one another. I like legal suspense stories but there is no suspense here.Sources tell Deadline that HBO has acquired rights to the John Grisham novel, A Time For Mercy, the sequel to Grisham’s classic novel on which the 1996 film was based, and are developing it as a limited series with McConaughey in final negotiations to reprise the role of defense attorney Jake Brigance. Will John Grisham write another Jake Brigance book? Sycamore trees have been revered by many cultures throughout history for their beauty, strength, and longevity. In ancient Greece, the sycamore was associated with the goddess Hera, queen of the gods and goddess of marriage and childbirth. The tree was also seen as a symbol of fertility and abundance. And now comes “A Time for Mercy.” You get the feeling that Grisham, who has written several dozen books by now, has returned to the place closest to his heart. Thirty-one years have passed in the real world since we were first in Clanton, but only five in its fictional life. What happens in a time for mercy? Hubbard notes that his children will certainly contest the new will because they are greedy and that Jake must do whatever it takes to make sure the new will is enforced. He says he chose Jake because of the admirable work that Jake did during the Hailey trial. How he achieves that in a way that will leave fans of both sides of the issue satisfied is amazing. Grisham's dénouement will not only please you but it will move you and, possibly, just possibly, it will move the USA toward that post-racial society that has so far remained just a societal dream.

Sycamore Row” is a true literary event — the sequel, nearly a quarter-century later, to “A Time to Kill,” Grisham’s first and perhaps best-regarded novel. (It is taught in schools and has recently been turned into a Broadway show.) Is John Grisham in the movie Sycamore Row? The brother turns out to be a key - hardly surprising given the subplot - to the dead man's past, with a story about a childhood trauma of witnessing a horrible crime. This is supposed to be a twist but honestly, most readers will see it coming since it is telegraphed all the way through the book that something awful happened in the housekeeper's family past, connected to the dead man's family past. While Jake argues on behalf of the estate, other attorneys represent Lettie (and her shiftless husband Simeon).....The disbarred Lucien, Jake's friend and ex-partner who is an alcoholic but when sober still a sharp legal mind, goes to Alaska and manages to obtain Ancil's testimony. Ancil explains why Seth left the money to his housekeeper and the significance of the sycamore tree from which he hung himself. A Time to Kill is one of the most popular novels of our time. Now we return to that famous courthouse in Clanton as Jake Brigance once again finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial-a trial that will expose old racial tensions and force Ford County to confront its tortured history. Grisham’s only children’s series centers around Theodore Boone, a 13-year-old boy from Pennsylvania. Wishing to follow in his parents’ footsteps, both successful lawyers, young Theo spends most of his time inside the courtroom.

Elderly Seth Hubbard of Clanton, Mississippi - suffering from cancer - commits suicide. Just before he takes his life, however, Seth writes a handwritten will.

The Lacy Stoltz Series

John Grisham’s books have sold more than 300 million copies in 42 languages. Nine of his novels have been turned into films, including his first one, “A Time to Kill.” Grisham’s latest legal thriller is his sequel to that first novel, set in the same Mississippi town. … The book is titled, “Sycamore Row.” Why are there no more John Grisham movies? It's a different kind of law than what we usually get in courtroom novels. It centers around a holographic will handwritten by a man on the eve of his suicide by hanging (from a sycamore tree, a fact you should keep in mind). It's established pretty early on that his kids, son and daughter, don't have much time for the old man, so you won't be surprised to learn they don't make out too well in this will. And of course, there's an earlier will out there, all lawyerly and notarized, in which the kids fare much better. Which will wins? Read on.
