Now that we have given you our recommendations, we should look at the nutritional values of each vegetable. If you are on a special diet or you count your calories, here is a small chart to make your choice easier.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about jicama and the best substitutes for jicama. What Is Jicama?

This vegetable can be eaten raw, baked, or boiled. The tubers are slightly reminiscent of potatoes, although, with their number of small growths, they look more like ginger roots. Since the plant is a natural insecticide, pest control isn’t a huge concern. However, weevils can be a problem, though you won’t see them often. Weevils are a beetle that can cause damage if left to their own devices. You can spread diatomaceous earth on top of the mulch at the base of the plant to deter them from climbing onto the jicama, and pyrethrin is a natural insecticide made from dried chrysanthemum flowers that kills the adult weevil.

You will need a sharp vegetable peeler because the skin is truly tough. Can you eat water chestnuts raw? We are keen to support our growers, who are typically at the bottom of the food-system chain. We try to balance affordable prices for customers with a good return for the growers, a very difficult thing to achieve given the market realities of UK horticulture. Cheap overseas labour, low fuel-mile costs and low grocery expenditure in the UK have all combined to muddle our shopping perceptions. In real terms, fresh fruit and veg has never been cheaper. Farmers (including ours) are surviving on very low wages because the prices we have all come to expect don’t meet the true costs of production, and trading systems generally favour the buyers rather than the growers. Although we can’t change the market overnight, we have long supported our growers in other ways, helping them out when times are hard, and always dealing with them in an honest and human way. They tell us they far prefer dealing with us to the supermarkets. Water chestnuts a pleasant taste and texture, as well as many health benefits for the human body. They are rich in vitamins and minerals and are low in sodium and fat. I just had jicama for the first time yesterday. It was served raw and cut into french fry shapes, served with hummus. Wonderful taste and texture!

I bought jicama for the first time today without knowing what I bought. At Weight Watchers they challenged us to try something we knew nothing about. So I brought it home from Kroger and tried it. So good just plain. I did not add anything to it. A little sweet and pretty moist. Will be great in salads or with fruit or just by itself. So glad WW had the challenge. Before anything else, you should know that the only edible part of jicama is the root. You should never try to eat the remaining parts like the leaves or flowers since they contain rotenone.

Don’t worry too much about pests. Jicama is not likely to have pest problems during growth. This is because the flowers, seeds, and leaves are poisonous. If you do find that you have a pest problem, remove the pests yourself, or use an organic pest spray.Just had a salad of jicama, mangoes, pomegranates, blueberries with lime juice as dressing. Oh my soul!

A: Growing jicama from seeds is easy, but you need to have plenty of warmth and sunshine to give the tubers time to grow to an adequate size. Although considered a perennial, it is more of an annual, since the root is the food source. Jicama grows throughout the summer, with a harvest of the jicama root in the fall. You can grow the plants from jicama seeds, but you will need to allow plenty of time for the jicama to mature. We will discuss more about growing jicama in the next section. Planting Jicama I have just heard of Jicama. Never had it. Would like to know where I can buy it in Canada. I'm from Montreal, Quebec. We have Walmart but they don't sell vegetables here like your Walmart. Does anyone out there know what grocery store would sell it in Montreal, Quebec?I live in Canada, in Woodbridge near Toronto. I went to Walmart to find jicama but they never heard of it. Does anyone know where to buy it here in gives your body all the fiber it needs for a day. Try saying that about any other food so tasty. These little guys are so versatile! You can prepare them just about any way you could imagine and serve them in accompaniment with almost any entree. A fantastic food, all the way around. In CT, I have found it in some grocery stores and Asian markets, as it very popular in some areas of Asia. This article suggests storing it in the refrigerator, yet every other claims temps below 56° can harm it. I say keep it out, as that's the way they store it in Mexico.
