Description

To add Butter, you must have combined at least four identical mushrooms. For adding Cidre, you must cook at least five. You must always move the last card into the Decay pile and restore the relevant number of cards to the Forest at the end of each turn. 1. Take a card from the Forest Fungi is like the essence of an autumn forest: full of warm colours, slightly damp mossy ground and, of course, delicious mushrooms sprouting after a gentle rain. Players are walking through the forest collecting all the edible mushrooms they can find, to cook later over their open fire. Once the draw pile is emptied and the forest floor depleted, each player tallies up their points and the one with the highest amount wins. Fungi - The Verdict It’s so important to shuffle the cards well, both the first time you play and between every other round. You can end up with lots of the same cards in one go. It’s incredibly irritating when, like in my first game, you end up with four Fly agarics in a row right at the start! That makes things much more difficult.

Each player will start the game with a pan and three other randomly dealt forest cards. A “forest” will also be dealt, which is eight randomly dealt cards from the forest pile, that runs horizontally across your playing surface. The shoes will be placed below the two cards furthest from the draw pile, which is made up of the remaining forest cards. The game comes in a small, round container with 60 cards, 35 point tokens, and an instructions sheet inside. The container itself is portable due to its compact size, meaning you can take the fungus-filled fun with you anywhere! Also, the whole container looks like a mushroom, with the lid its red and white spotted cap. The little detail of two faces on the tub, one on each side, is so funny! Depending on which way you put it, you can have your mushroom box look either happy or dead and sad, you decide! Grow games aren’t all about worms, though it is a popular choice. These same mechanics are used in a range of other scenarios from survival games like Mope.io where you start as a mouse, to Powerline.io, a game that limits movement to 4 directions like the original Snake. Have you ever woken up one morning and wondered whether fungi have feelings…and faces? Fungi have been around for millions of years: they aren’t plants, they aren’t animals, but in this charming, magical card game from Ridley’s Games, Funky Fungi, they’re full of life and personality! What’s The Game Like?

Development log

The game itself is very enjoyable and can be played as tactically as you wish. Myself? I like to try and collect odd cards to spite my opponent, but with a strict hand limit this can be risky. The difficulty is balancing collecting mushrooms and resources such as pans, baskets etc - as one without the other simply won’t win the game. For me though, the beauty of Fungi really is in its simplicity. An easy go-to on a cold, Tuesday night, its theme is strong enough to transport me to a roaring camp-fire with the smell of buttery mushrooms lifting in the air.

The game finishes when the last card from the Forest has been taken. It stops immediately. Don’t finish the turn or allow each other one last go. It’s like that moment on a cookery show when the hosts force the contestants to “Stop cooking!”

What Curators Say

The best grow games feature worms and snakes fighting for nourishment. It’s survival in its rawest form. Worms Zone is a game that captures the essence of survival perfectly. In this game, you must battle for food and power-ups while tactically taking down other worms with sneaky maneuvers. The original grow game is Agar.io, a title that needs no introduction. In this game, you simply grow the circle bigger by consuming the smaller circles. Worms and Snakes If you end up with many identical mushrooms (for example, there are ten Honey fungus cards), you might be able to add multiple Butters or Cidres. The requirements apply to each card. So, if you have eight identical mushrooms, you could add two Butters. If you have nine, you could add a Butter and a Cidre, and so on. How to Play Fungi Image From Benjamin Kitchen Each turn, you get one action. You must do one of these actions if possible. If you can’t do anything (usually because you’ve hit your hand limit by accident!), you’ll need to watch the other player taking as many turns as they want until you can go again. Torturous. Fungi break down and absorb orgtanic material for their nourishment, so any experiment must first provide them with food. Oxygen and moisture are also necessary. A material for the growth of fungi for experiments is called a medium. Most commercially prepared media for growing fungi are extracts of plant materials like potatoes. A medium that is specially prepared to contain only the exact nutrients required by one species of fungus is called a "Minimal medium". The choice of growth medium depends on the question that is being asked.
