Assessor's note: Such activities are not actually "villainous" - despite the annoyance and melodrama displayed by PI upon assessment - as they are central to an Assessor's scope of work, for real. Tools: Forensic tools well-used. Forensic details did not overwhelm project.

Marino followed me out of the bedroom and I was surprised when he announced, “I’ll walk you to your car.” I fell out with the Scarpetta series a while ago, but when this was recommended, I thought I’d give them another whirl, as I really enjoyed the early ones. I was glad to see that all of my favourite characters are still around, and the interactions between them have such a natural, real feel, just as I remember. The book started off well, and I found myself wondering why I had fallen out with them. I liked the new (to me) characters and the difficulties they bring. There was so much to like. The middle of the book started to feel a bit clunky to me, and it lost a lot of the natural flow, raising questions and feeling distinctly far-fetched for a variety of reasons. And as for the end… well, what can I say? Did the publisher bring the deadline forward? It made no sense to end it in that way and I'm surprised that it was published in that format. He had become the self-appointed dark ruler of the city, an obsession for thousands of people he had never seen, and an obsession of mine. Mr. Nobody. This is a very popular series, the first book in the Kay Scarpetta series and the debut novel for Patricia Cornwell. As the series title has been named the novels are revolving around the Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta who teams up with Sergeant Pete Marino in the Richmond Police Department to solve a murder case. I assume these two will be teaming up in all the other books too. Death by asphyxiation takes only several minutes. That’s a very long time when every cell in your body is screaming for air.Suspects were brought up and never really dismissed as suspects; rather, they'd just find a new suspect and forget the one before. It felt like a wild goose chase. His brown eyes finally fixed unemphatically on me. “American’s what he told me. But I get the impression his main interest is plays. Seems he’s in one right now. Shakespeare. Hamlet, I think he said. Says he’s done a lot of acting, including some bit parts in movies shot around here, a couple of TV commercials, too.”

The book felt long. It was extremely detailed when it came to describe the technology used. I skimmed over most of those parts because the technology was extremely dated and it was hard to follow what she was saying. Also it described red-tape procedures in her lab that just put me to sleep.Logically enough, I started with the first of the series. The plot is one we've seen over and over, a brutal serial killer, but the way he is caught is a mind-bender that you won't see in any other similar story. Even before Scarpetta’s headquarters has been officially notified about the case, Marino and Scarpetta’s FBI agent husband, Benton Wesley, receive suspicious calls, allegedly from someone at Interpol. But it makes no sense. Why would the elite international police agency know about the case or be interested? It soon becomes apparent that an onslaught of harassment might be the work of an anonymous cyberbully named Tailend Charlie, who has been sending cryptic communications to Scarpetta for over a week. Out of the same dresser drawer came a box of Trojans, which, I pointed out to Marino, was a little unusual, since Lori Petersen, based on what I’d seen in the master bedroom, was on oral contraceptives.

Because the homicides began two months ago, he may have been recently released from prison or a mental hospital. This was the speculation last week, but the theories were constantly changing. In this relaunch of the electrifying, landmark #1 bestselling thriller series, chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta hunts those responsible for two wildly divergent and chilling murders. A fist suddenly banged the top of the table in a startling outburst of rage. “I know!” His eyes were wild. “But all of them, the police and everybody!” His voice was shaking. “I know how it is! Reporters and everybody crawling all over the place. I don’t want every son of a bitch and his brother staring at her!” An open doorway led into a corridor running the length of the house. To my right appeared a series of rooms, to the left was the kitchen, where Marino and a young officer were talking to a man I assumed was the husband.

New Orleans, French Quarter (summer theater tour of Lori Petersen's husband when he may have committed rape) Scarpetta is awakened in the middle of the night by the killer, who has broken into her home. As she attempts to reach for a gun, Marino bursts into her bedroom and shoots the intruder, having realized that the news article would make Scarpetta a likely target. Scarpetta's suspicion proves to be correct; the killer was a 9-1-1 dispatcher. Ordinarily, the medical examiner on call is summoned to a death scene. But this wasn’t ordinary. I had made it clear after the second case that no matter the hour, if there was another murder, I was to be called. Marino wasn’t keen on the idea. Ever since I was appointed chief medical examiner for the Commonwealth of Virginia less than two years ago he’d been difficult. I wasn’t sure if he didn’t like women, or if he just didn’t like me. You can come on in, Doc,” the officer with the video camera was saying. “I’ve got all this on film.” In June 2021, it was reported that a television series adaptation of novel series is in development from Comet Pictures, a production company owned by Jamie Lee Curtis and Blumhouse Television.
