TOO MANY CHARACTERS - I'm a big fan of the multi-character perspective and I understand that writing from the POV of 10 characters is a tremendous challenge and sadly, one I feel that Vermette fell slightly short of. (Though it would be remiss of me not to mention I highly admire Vermette for the incredible amount of respect and empathy she has for all her characters.) Shares in Book Lists, Gaming Mastering the Craft: Premier Books for Grasping Gambling Inside and Out Less convincing were the parents. I had trouble accepting that they could be so very bad at looking after Jesse and dealing with his allergies. Or that they could be so blind to the fact that their other son was regularly doing himself serious damage. It’s not that I doubt such parents exist, they just seemed to be a bit over the top with their failing in this book.

When Shawn Mooney first came on the Reading Envy Podcast in January 2017, he discussed this book. That episode is even named after a quote from the book. The writing style. I tend to gravitate towards a writing style that feels like a friend of mine is just telling me a story. It just feels real. And after reading her blog sort of obsessively this morning…she writes books like she writes thoughts. I like that. The themes of pain, abuse, trauma and the stories & fear that we are forced to carry as women and people of colour were very well explored and the language (despite the constant repetition of the word 'gross' which bugged me slightly) was beautiful, simple and poetic. All our bedrooms sleep up to two people and there is a mix of single and double beds in our accommodation

Break by Hannah Moskowitz | Goodreads

Feeling a little lost in life, Hannah Martin moves in with her best friend Gabby. At a bar, they meet Hannah’s old high school boyfriend, Ethan, and he joins them for drinks. At the end of the night, Hannah has a choice to make: go home with Gabby, or stay a little later and let Ethan take her home. Based on this decision, Hannah’s life will go one of two ways. The book proceeds to tell the story of Hannah’s life from both timelines, ultimately showing how different her life will turn out based on this one decision. The book is thus an exploration of the choices we make, the paths we take, and how to find true love in a world of never-ending possibilities. Zu Beginn fiel es mir nicht leicht alle Frauen dieser Familie mit indigenen Wurzeln auseinander zu halten. Gut, dass es einen Stammbaum im Buch gibt.In a series of shifting narratives, people who are connected, both directly and indirectly, with the victim — police, family, and friends — tell their personal stories leading up to that fateful night. Lou, a social worker, grapples with the departure of her live-in boyfriend. Cheryl, an artist, mourns the premature death of her sister Rain. Paulina, a single mother, struggles to trust her new partner. Phoenix, a homeless teenager, is released from a youth detention centre. Officer Scott, a Métis policeman, feels caught between two worlds as he patrols the city. Through their various perspectives a larger, more comprehensive story about lives of the residents in Winnipeg’s North End is exposed. Here's the thing with Break. First off it's a great read. The language is wonderful and the timing is great. I think this is young adult novel. That thought is neither here nor there but I thought I'd state it anyway. The pacing is almost spot on as well. Aside from that the author seems to be wise beyond her years. Hannah Moskowitz does a great job adding interesting information to the story at times when you don't expect it. Refreshing. This is a clever read as well. Our protagonist, is clearly defined with memorable attributes. This is the story of four generations of Metis women and their families. It explores their love for one another and bond through life’s daily struggles, stresses and horrors. It is a heart-breaking and haunting novel that will stay with me for quite a while. Ideal for couples, our stylish apartments and hotel rooms can be found with woodland or lakeside views. They include: Authored by a senior in high school, this debut novel would make a veteran author proud. Jonah worries about a lot. He worries about his parents, worries about the fact his baby brother cries all the time, but most of all he worries about his younger brother, Jessie, who is severe and life-threatening allergies. After being hurt in a car accident, Jonah has started trying to break every bone in his body to make himself stronger. He is helped by his best friend, Naomi, who films him breaking his bones. As Jonah moves deeper and deeper into pain and breaking, the question is who is worrying enough about Jonah to help him.

Despite the horror of the assault, and the uncomfortable matters discussed, the book helped me gain a better understanding of the discrimination First Nations people face, and the generational trauma that appears impossible to escape. The minute I read the premise, my eyebrows shot up. Who breaks bones for fun? Well, ladies and gentlemen, let me present to you: seventeen-year-old Jonah McNab. BREAK is a story about a family, each of is broken in very different ways. It's a difficult book to read on many levels and a brilliant book given that Hannah Moskowitz was still in high school when she wrote it.

In Vermette's gritty debut novel, a nominee for Canada's 2016 Governor General's Award for fiction, a thirteen-year-old girl is brutally assaulted in a snowy vacant lot. It is late at night, and a young mother whose house abuts the land, views the scene, "freezes", and then calls the police. One of the officers, Tommy Scott, like both the victim and the witness to the crime, is Metis (a person of mixed aboriginal and European ancestry). He is determined to get to the bottom of what occurred. Crimes involving "Nates" (natives) are ho-hum, routine occurrences to Officer Christie, Scott's older, white, police partner. (A stereotypically overweight, slow-moving frequenter of Tim Horton's coffee shops, Christie is weary of the messiness of people's lives and policing in general). One senses there is no real will to investigate much of the crime that goes down in this part of town. Racism simmers here in north-end Winnipeg. I was incredibly disappointed we never found out why Will cried so much. This aspect of the story played such a huge part that it should have gotten a bit more attention in the end. I did find this book to be well-written, and I really admire the skill it takes to convincingly wrap words together to form a story that wouldn't let me go. Midwinter Break by Bernard MacLaverty review - The Guardian

The Wisdom of a Broken Heart: How to Turn the Pain of a Breakup Into Healing, Insight, and New Love by Susan Piver Winnipeg, North End: Als Stella in jener verschneiten Februarnacht aus dem Fenster schaut, scheint sie zu erstarren: Sie beobachtet die brutale Vergewaltigung und Misshandlung einer jungen Frau. A city-with-fancy-food sort of a break?’ Maura narrows her eyes. ‘Or a Rihanna sort of a break? Well?’ She presses her case. ‘Is it the city-with-fancy-food break?’ What an incredible debut! Moskowitz is an extremely talented writer! Break was full of fantastically portrayed three dimensional characters and an insane central idea. A goal to break every bone in your body? How does that not pique your curiosity. Well, it did mine and this lead to me completely devouring the entire novel in one setting. However, the story doesn’t often step off the gas from its headlong blood-and-guts joke fest. As such, it didn’t often allow us moments to see its heroes in human moments. The plot was solidly constructed, and its settings interesting. The novel’s characters, though, were more archetypes than people, and the protagonist, Jeremiah Reid, felt like a bundle of inconsistencies.Parkdean Resorts UK Limited t/a Parkdean Resorts registered in England (Reg. This wasn’t a happy book and I wouldn’t say that I had a connection to any of these characters but I did have a connection to the story in a whole though and it did open up my eyes and showed me how it is to live in a neighborhood like the one described in this book. I appreciated that she put a voice to them. For that I have hope. This was another sisters read and our varying viewpoints provided for an interesting and diverse discussion.
