This pretty color is similar to lilac, and it’s a versatile choice if you want a light purple that isn’t quite a pastel. Pale purple would do well in a palette with other pale versions of cool colors, and it also looks good with neutrals like brown or gray. So purple as to appear almost blue, this shade is a tertiary color to purple and close in appearance to the natural color of Amethyst.

This plum variety tree is practical and an aesthetic addition to your garden. The beautiful white flowers it bears in the spring will add to the magnificence of your garden. However, while the tree has strong disease resistance, it can be sensitive to cropping. Hence, thinning it out in summer before harvesting the fruits in mid-August is essential. If not thinned, the tree may not produce any yields the next year. 10. Oullins Gage As with most Japanese varieties of plums, Simca plums are larger and juicer. The color magenta was named after the Italian Battle of Magenta, as the color was developed shortly before the battle itself. Elephant Heart plum. This type of sweet Japanese plum has dark red to purple mottled skin and sweet juicy red flesh. Plums, gages and damsons are closely related. Plums are large, usually soft-fleshed – perfect for eating or cooking (depending on the cultivar). Gages are small, round and sweet, but grow best in a sunny spot. Damsons are especially hardy and have a spicy, tart flavour and are good cooked and jammed. The most useful cultivars to grow in a garden are listed below. They are less vulnerable to plant pests and infections and are ideal for those new to gardening and looking for something low-maintenance. The fruits initially appear light green and darken to deep purple over time and are slightly smaller than other varieties. But it tastes delicious when eaten fresh from the tree. 3. Avalon This neon-like shade is very similar to Electric Purple. It’s perfect to use wherever you need a pop of color. However, Hot Purple also works nicely in summery color palettes where you need several bright, attention-grabbing colors. A bright purple with enough red to appear almost pink. The first reference to this color is from 1912.

These plum trees fruit abundantly and are self-fertile, which means they do not require cross-pollination from another plum variety to fertilize their flower and grow fruits. They can evolve independently, making them an ideal choice for gardeners with limited space. Victoria plums are tolerant of cold conditions and are the favourite plum variety among growers in the UK. 2. Blue Tit Purple probably isn’t the color you think of when you hear the word “rustic.” However, the name suits this shade. It has a slightly dark, slightly weathered appearance that looks great when paired with heather gray. We have included Mirabelle here for a couple of reasons firstly because it is so easy to grow in the UK, so easy in fact that it is often found growing wild. The picture of the plums below are taken from a tree which has grown in significant shade on a countryside pathway but it still produces a large crop of fruit every year. Santa Rosa plums are suitable for many uses, including eating fresh or using in baked goods. Satsuma (Blood Plum) This shade is the color officially designated as “violet” in Japan. Uses of plum

Different varieties offer a wealth of delicious fruit options – various levels of sweetness and juiciness, different textures, colours and sizes, as well as a range of crop sizes and ripening times. In colder locations, consider a late-flowering variety such as ‘Blue Tit’, ‘Marjorie’s Seedling’ and ‘Oullins Gage’, to avoid damage to the blossom, which can reduce the crop. Varieties with an RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) are recommended by our RHS fruit experts, as they performed well in trials – see our list of AGM fruit and veg. The sweet taste of the Moyer plums is so sweet that it is even known as “sugar plums.” These are generally planted along with other European plums, like Brooks Plums, for better growth of their plants. Another thing that makes them the best is their insect repellent property. This means the variety of plums is less tension for the farmers regarding insects and pests-related issues. The only thing that needs to be taken care of is to keep them safe from ‘Bacteria.’

Similar to the French Prune, the Italian prune variety is a large, oblong, egg-shaped plum with a powdery coating on purple-blue skin. This freestone plum variety has green-amber juicy flesh that turns a deep fuchsia color when cooked. As the fruit ripens on the plum tree, its sweetness intensifies. Cultivating plums is a rewarding experience, with so many UK plum varieties. There are even more locally harvested varieties sold by regional growers; you can explore them in your local market. You might imagine a powder-blue shade when you think of periwinkle. But the periwinkle flowers the color is named for can actually vary considerably in color. Some are blue, some are white, and some are purple, and Periwinkle Purple accurately captures the color of the purple variant. This pastel-like color is pale and dreamy, and it would make a great wall color. Research from 2017 found that a potassium-rich diet helped reduce artery stiffening in mice with high cholesterol diets. Mirabelle plums look similar to apricots as they have bright yellow-orangey skins. These sweet plums are sometimes called Mirabelle prunes or cherry plums. Cutting open the soft skin reveals sweet amber flesh and a stone in the middle. Their high sugar content means that these round fruits are excellent for making jellies, jams, and baked goods.

Elephant Heart Plum

Oullins Gage is one of the UK’s most reliable gage plum varieties, producing relatively large fruits every summer. The fruit has an exceptionally sweet, tender, and succulent flavour, with yellow-green flesh and gold skin. It can be used to make delicious pies and jams or eaten fresh. Additionally, it is the best kind of plum to store by freezing or bottling. Third, when the tree typically fruits (early or late in the season) to help you prepare for harvest and preserve the fruit. Next, how the fruits can be used best, such as eating fresh, cooking, or making preserves; this shall help you determine which variety of plum you can go ahead with cultivating.

Also known as psychedelic purple, this color lies somewhere between the vivacity of electric purple and magenta. Made from fluorescent magenta and blue, this color gained a large amount of popularity with hippies in the 1960s and 70s. A cross between a gage and a plum, Opal has taken on the full sweet flavour of the gage side of its parents but with a slightly larger fruit. Greengage Plums This color is the standard for purple in the CMYK printing system. Purple CMYK is a classic, slightly blue-tinted purple that looks especially good paired with blues and greens. Related RHS Guides Positioning fruitPlums like fertile soil, ideally slightly acidic, with a pH of 6–6.5, but they’re tolerant of a wide range of soils. They don’t like to dry out, especially when the fruit is forming, so generally prefer a loamy or clay soil, as long as it doesn’t get waterlogged. Despite the name, Ultra Violet isn’t an overwhelming or incredibly loud purple shade. If anything, it’s one of the quieter ones on the list. As a bluish-purple, it’s a lovely shade if you want a calming color that’s still in the purple family. Its complementary color is a somewhat dull olive green, and it also looks nice near various shades of gray.
