Description

That said, this is the first monitor backlight I’ve encountered that’s actually bright enough to light up the wall behind it and act as a bias light. It uses DSC for visually lossless support of high resolution and refresh rates, without the need for colour depth or chroma sacrifices. Set the monitor to a sensible day to day brightness level, preferably as close to 120 cd/m 2 as you can get it (our tests are once the screen is calibrated to this luminance).

Never content to rest on its laurels, LG has upped the ante on that display with a full 4K, 144Hz IPS panel, DisplayHDR 600 certification, Nvidia G-Sync Compatibility, and more.

The LG 27GN950 is a 4K IPS monitor that excels at many things including fast-paced gaming thanks to its quick 1ms response time, G-SYNC compatibility, and 144Hz refresh rate (without any compression thanks to DSC).

The wider gamut here in the default mode with more vivid and saturated colours is nice for gaming and multimedia which is the screen’s primary target usage. PerformanceI spent a good amount of time with first-person shooters to get a good sense of the 27GN950-B’s responsiveness. If you were worried about possible overshoot at 60Hz for console gaming (assuming no support for 120Hz) or external devices you can also drop down to the ‘Normal’ response time setting which completely eliminated the overshoot, but response times were not quite as fast as a result. You will need to make sure you have the latest version of the drivers from NVIDIA to ensure this feature works properly. We have fed this back to LG for further investigation as this could well be addressed through a firmware update we are sure.Keep in mind also that to power a screen at 4K and up to 160Hz you are going to need a very good system and high end graphics card anyway. The LG Control Center software can also be installed to help you control the Sphere lighting system in more detail. This represents what could be achieved through just simple changes to the monitor itself, and also what you could expect when working with content outside of an ICC profile managed workflow.

If they are not then this can lead to some additional smearing and blurring on moving content as the pixels can’t keep up. The colors are precise and consistent across the entire screen, so you can even use the monitor for color-critical work as the LG 27GN950 is factory-calibrated and supports hardware/software calibration via LG’s True Color Pro app. Note that the overclocked refresh rate of 160Hz is only available at 4K resolution, it is not available at 1080p or 1440p. The stand is a matte black plastic colour and is thick and chunky, providing a sturdy and stable base for the display.Enabling VideoSync mode in LG’s UltraGear Control Center app allows the backlight to match what’s happening on the screen, projecting it on the wall behind. The NVIDIA G-sync logo on the left hand side of the foot is a sticker by the way, so can be removed, whereas the LG logo on the right hand edge is etched on to the plastic finish and is permanent. HDR content has also received a noticeable bump with an improved peak brightness of 600-nits, up from 400, and 16 local dimming zones, earning it DisplayHDR 600 certification. However, the difference between 144Hz of the GN950 and 240Hz of the G7 is also not that deal-breaking.
