Now, like I said the tone set in the first scene didn't carry on throughout, or at least not in first half. There's still a hint of mystery and suspense but just a hint. Instead in the first half, the book focused on medicine, Will's experiences in patient after patient, all are laboring mothers. Yes, the book is about medicine history and I see the importance of countless patients but it would've been better if there's equal stress in the crime aspect of the story. And hey, the labors look the same to me so I don't see the need to have so many of it and presented one after the other. But again, I'm ok if there's many of them but I need the other aspect of the story presented too, maybe in between the laboring mothers.

Steff Kennedy, the hero of Not the End of the World, is mentioned as the photographer who took the picture of the Arguments for their single sleeve in A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away. He also features in Dead Girl Walking shooting a major photospread of the female members of the band "Savage Earth Heart" for "Tatler". Art Alexakis of the band Everclear has been thanked by Brookmyre inside the front cover of two of his books - Be My Enemy and The Sacred Art Of Stealing. Brookmyre has said that Sacred Art was inspired by the Everclear song 'Unemployed Boyfriend' from the album Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile. This is the song which the lead character, Zal Innez, discusses with Angelique De Xavia. De Xavia is stated by her brother to spend her evenings alone "drinking supermarket merlot and listening to that depressing Mogwai rubbish" in The Sacred Art of Stealing. The first name for Innez, as well as the inspiration for the costumes worn by his gang of bank robbers, are taken from Zal Cleminson, guitarist for The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, who always wore Pierrot makeup on stage. Parlabane is a fan of Skids and Big Country and Jasmine Sharp goes to see Twin Atlantic perform live in one of her books. I just love this series of historical novels by Ambrose Parry. The characters grow and develop with each one. In "Voices of the Dead" Dr Will Raven is a family man with another baby on the way. Meanwhile his friend Sarah is still struggling to find her way as so many doors are closed to women in Victorian Scotland. The plot was well presented, with plenty of characters who might or might not be what they seem, providing opportunities for speculation about just what was going on and who was responsible. My two fellow buddy-readers disliked the male arrogance that permeated the story, particularly with regard to Raven, the main male character. He seemed to evolve as the book went along, and although I am probably overly sensitive to that sort of thing in a contemporary setting, I was able to overlook here as it undoubtedly reflected reality. Novelist Christopher Brookmyre: My life in five games". BBC News. 14 July 2014 . Retrieved 14 July 2014. Award-winning crime writer Chris Brookmyre and anaesthetist Dr Marisa Haetzman have paired up under the pseudonym of Ambrose Parry to deliver a vividly-drawn historical novel - our unputdownable Thriller of the Month, The Way of All Flesh. Discover it here. Sarah is jealous of Raven's new romantic interest, which adds to her disillusionment of becoming a practicing doctor. A request from a maid sets her on the path of discovering a 'baby farm'. Unmarried girls and impoverished parents believed they were ensuring a bright future for their babies by paying a woman to find good homes for them. Some of the babies were, in turn, sold to unknown homes, but many died from neglect or were killed.

As if that wasn't sufficient.Raven soon discovers that Sarah and his wife Eugenie, intend to attend a display of "mesmerism" by a certain Dr Malham, whom Raven suspects is a fraud. He accepts that medical science is evolving rapidly but "mesmerism? No! However an urgent call summoning him to Surgeons Hall provides a more fascinating and puzzling attraction - certain body parts having been found in the office of the Head, Dr Christie, who is reluctant to involve the police as it would cause adverse publicity for the profession. It is not long ago that body snatching caused problems for the medical profession. Raven is charged with endeavouring to find who has been murdered.. Will Raven (Simpson’s protege) and Sarah Fisher (former housemaid) are determined to clear the name of their patron. Raven battles against the dark side of his very own nature and Sarah is working to expand her medical knowledge far beyond what society deems appropriate for a woman during this time. The two struggle to comprehend the cause of these deaths. Parry introduces the readers to Sarah Fisher, housemaid extraordinaire, who sidelines for her employer, the renowned Dr. James Simpson. Dr. Simpson allows Sarah to pursue her highly evolved interest in herbs and salves. She is adept at working with his patients within his at-home practice. It is here that Will becomes taken with Sarah as he pursues his apprenticeship under Dr. Simpson.

Dr Simpson swept in through the front door. His expression of irritation and curiosity turned to one of confusion and dismay as he took in the scene that greeted him: his housemaid in another man's home after dark, his apprentice bruised and bleeding, and both of them standing over the trussed-up figure of his sister-in-law's betrothed.

Jenny Dalziel is an Edinburgh CID officer, part of Hector McGregor's team as a DC in Quite Ugly One Morning, who becomes a close friend of Parlabane and appears or is referenced in most of his books. She is openly gay and in a relationship with a woman called Maggie who has survived breast cancer by the time of Dead Girl Walking. A rip-roaring tale of murder amid the medical experiments of 19th-century Edinburgh. The book brings both city and period to colourful life and is a joy to read’ The men-only club that was the medical fraternity is dealt with, especially in light of the trend for new discoveries such as hypnotism and mesmerism and the rush to adopt popular but untired therapies. There's even a bit of Burke-and-Hare bodysnatching. I enjoyed the medical side of the book, however gruesome it all was, and I think these scenes were well written, but sadly, it wasn't enough. This was a surprisingly disappointing read, and as it was a book I bought new, I feel even worse about not enjoying it as much as I'd hoped to. This appears to have been well researched in the historical side of things and that I found to be rather interesting, but as for knowing who our killer is, well...I knew that answer not too far into the book. It was too obvious, even for me.

Advance Praise

The character development was fantastic, with Sarah and Will taking their societal roles, but not necessarily in the expected ways. The setting is also really interesting as Dr Simpson (a real historical figure) tries to find something to ease patients pain that is safer and more effective than Ether.
