The plot was so easy to get caught up in but also focused heavily on these little moments between the two main characters, who I ended up really liking. you think that just because you're all smart and wealthy and attractive you can just do whatever the hell you want-" "wait. she looks how he believes art should look like, the kind of beautiful that makes you feel something, that presses your heart too tight against your ribcage.

The enemies (or academic rivals) to lovers element between Alice and Henry, too, fell flat — not enough enemies and barely more lovers made for a rather stale dynamic. although the book was undeniably remarkable, it lacked the detailed explanations of how and why she acquired the power of invisibility. For how analytical she is, she is also such an emotional little bean who wears her feelings on her sleeve. she's witty, sarcastic, knows what she wants, and is completely oblivious to the fact that henry likes her! when henry told alice’s dad that he was willing to wait until they finished their studies before officially dating I.

After another ceremony where Alice is celebrated for her grades, she has to share the spotlight again with none other than her ridiculously handsome nemesis, Henry Li. this book has been on my tbr and one of my most anticipated reads for months and i just want to say that ann liang’s books will never disappoint! frustration grows as the semester ends, worsened by an award ceremony and encounters with her nemesis, henry. the fantasy – or dare i say, magical realism – aspects played a bigger role in the story than i originally thought it would. She starts shivering, and a few seconds later she gets hyperventilating as if she’s suffering from fever and then BAM: She cannot see her own image in the mirror!

i like how he has strict parents but they ended up apologizing and being better 💌💌💌💌 yay for parent character development in asian fiction. henry + my bf literally confessed in almost the exact same way which had me giggling and squealing like i'm back in hs. I remember thinking a month ago about how much I hated him, how I couldn't bear to even be in the same room as him.HE IS MY YA AARON BLACKFORD (y’all know I never shut up about him - we’re talking ELITE, LOML, FELT IN MY SOUL, THIS IS RARE obsessions). She’s been successful in that although she’s had to (literally) share the spotlight for every award with her rival, Henry Li. i love the way she integrates asian culture without it being stereotypical ughh i just love love love her. Fantasy meets enemies to lovers romance with powerful messages made me enjoy my reading a lot more than I expected. i also went in thinking this was going to be focused solely on the romance, but the slow burn is the longest slow burn i have ever read i might be exaggerating.

and i really hope this deliverss cuz im a kdrama obsessed girrlie, and if this disappoints im coming for your soul. This book does the academic rivals dynamic so perfectly that within 50 pages I was yelling "PLEASE KISS!you know,” i muse out loud, “if it weren't for the fact that we hated each other's guts, we'd probably make an impressive power duo. you know,❞ i muse out loud, ❝if it weren’t for the fact that we hated each other’s guts, we’d probably make an impressive power duo.

She is a determined girl who may not immediately know her exact direction in life, but wants to succeed no matter what. The only thing that kind of was a minus for me is that it was so short and how abruptly it ended… I wish we could’ve seen more of Henry and Alice together at the end and maybe even an epilogue. chen, who showed a genuine interest in alice's dreams, even though she couldn't perceive their significance initially. Her parents work difficult jobs with long hours to provide for her, and this spurs her into wanting to be able to do something with the education and opportunities that come with it. When she isn’t stressing out over her college assignments or writing, she can be found making over-ambitious to-do lists, binge-watching dramas, and having profound conversations with her pet labradoodle about who’s a good dog.Alice thinks her secret power helps her get enough money to pay her tuition and help out her family’s financial problems. i don't know what ann liang puts in her books, but i could have read this in one setting if i hadn't stopped myself. i do wish the enemies to lovers part had been played up to a little more, and the magic realism part too, because it wasn’t fully explained in the end what happened ⸺ but oh well. I liked both of the main characters, and their relationship between us which had an academic enemies to lovers trope.
