Description

The very high percentage of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional planted on the estate result in the powerful aromas of mint and violets on the finest Ports from Bomfim. The principal grape varieties planted are: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and old mixed vines. Over the centuries, the winemakers at Bomfim have evolved a style that suits this particular vineyard; fermentations are a little longer, resulting in a drier Port Wine that has become the hallmark of Dows. Dow’s was one of the first Port companies to recognise the importance of vineyard ownership in the Douro. One of his primary tasks is to conduct field experiments to assess such aspects as trellising systems, suitability of specific grape varieties, among several others.

In the good years when Dow’s does not declare a Vintage, the best Ports of Quinta do Bomfim are carefully selected and bottled as Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port. Bomfim’ s wines are vinified in the quinta’s fermentation vats which have been successively upgraded over the years and which continue to produce excellent wines.Spice and pepper balance the black chocolate flavours and these are very evident in all the quinta’s ports.

However, even in a slightly lesser vintage most Port Houses can make a very good wine from their top property. The old vines first planted by Maurice, John and Ron Symington in the mid 1920’s bring a fabulous complexity to the Port wines made at Bomfim. Quinta do Bomfim, one of the finest properties in the Upper Douro, was acquired by the company in 1896 and is the oldest quinta in continuous ownership. The property is situated in the centre of the best wine-producing area, known as the ‘Cima Corgo’, which offers an ideal balance between the relatively wet ‘Baixo Corgo’ to the west (with sometimes excessively rich soils for the production of great Port) and the intense heat of the ‘Douro Superior’ to the east.Spice and pepper balance the black chocolate flavours and these are very evident in all Bomfim Ports. Bomfim is a classic ‘River Quinta’ with many natural advantages: it is south-facing ensuring ample exposure to the sun; its stony schist soil affords excellent drainage allowing water to reach the vines’ deep roots; the annual rainfall is near perfect at 800mm (15 year annual average); the altitude ranges from 120 to 340 metres above sea level, accommodating both gentle gradients lower down and progressively steeper slopes higher up the valley side, as well as offering a variety of aspects.

Quinta do Bomfim is situated in the heart of the Douro winegrowing region, just east of Pinhão on the north bank of the river Douro. This results in excellent ripening of the grapes during the growing season, essential to the production of first-class Port. When young Quinta do Bomfim wines are austere, complex and concentrated with very fine peppery tannins.Over the centuries, the winemakers at Bomfim have evolved a style that suits this particular vineyard: fermentations are a little longer, resulting in a drier Port wine that has become the hallmark of Dow’s. The whole Quinta Do Bomfim vineyard is “A-rated”, the highest quality grading conferred by the region’s wine regulatory body. Abundant fruit flavours with hints of maple, raisins and ripe blackberries give elegance and poise to this wine. Dow’s Quinta Do Bomfim is possibly Dow’s finest vineyard, acquired and planted by the firm in 1980, is situated in perhaps the most favourable location in the Upper Douro. Winemaking: Bomfim’s wines are vinified on site in the quinta’s fermentation vats which have been successively upgraded and which continue to produce excellent wines.

The grapes are normally extremely ripe at the time of picking giving spice and pepper to balance the black chocolate flavours as found in all Bomfim Ports. Dows Quinta Do Bomfim Single Quinta Vintage Port is made in exactly the same way as Dow’s Vintage Port but in a year that is not declared as a vintage. They will tend to mature a little earlier than the very rare ‘Declared’ years, but can be every bit as good as some other Vintage Ports. Some powerful tannins in the background, although these really play a minor role, only showing on the finish. In the Quinta’s Centenary year - 1996, Dow’s produced a superb single - quinta Vintage Port from Quinta do Bomfim. The whole Bomfim vineyard is ‘A-rated’, the highest quality grading conferred by the region’s wine regulatory body. Two-thirds of the vineyard is now over 20 years old, whilst one third is between 30 to 40 years old. But you can also incorporate them into a meal, combining for instance a Steak au Poivre with a young Vintage.
